you dont have to enter the plains of oblivion...
While both of these games share the same engine here are the differences, but I have mostly played New Vegas more than Oblivion so lemme share the reason for getting FNV:

- Created by Obsidian, not Bethesda.
- Has a better story and side quests than Bethesda's Fallout.
- Better skill usage. Meaning that there's no % of chance to successfully convince someone with just Speech. You really need a specific skill to be at specific number to do it.
- Weapon modification.
- Karma system are different for each town. It's not just for the whole game like Fallout 3 does.
- Multiple ways to finish the quest.
- Most of the major characters have an actual character and reasons behind their action. (Just better writing overall)
- It's pretty much immersive.

As for Oblivion, so far i can say that if you wish to have a game with a nice environment and the ability to visit the game's Hell called Oblivion.

New Vegas imho. Oblivion is boring, just like any Bethesda game.
New Vegas on the other hand is a proper RPG, with a story, varied NPCs etc. etc.
I haven't played Fallout NV and only a bit of Oblivion, but there is at least one good reason to get Oblivion:
Nehrim

It's a free total conversion mod for Oblivion, meaning a whole new game running on the same engine. It features enhanced graphics, a new story and setting, a whole new world to explore, many quests and secrets to uncover, a new soundtrack, voiceovers*, a different skill system etc. So you get two fantasy RPGs for the price of one, and in the best case you'll love both, or you find that one is not to your liking, but the other one might be.

The major differences between the two are that Nehrim has a more traditional skill system with XP for completing quests and killing monsters, and skills you need to learn from trainers, just like in the Gothic series, while in Oblivion you improve your skills by using them and don't get any XP from monsters. Oblivion has level scaling, adjusting the monsters you meet to your level, while in Nehrim a weak monster will always be weak and a strong monster always be strong but your character can get even stronger, so you might encounter monsters that at first may seem impossible to defeat, but when you come back at higher levels you will find it much easier to fight it. Last but not least, at lot of care has gone into crafting the world of Nehrim bit by bit, while in Oblivion, some parts can be rather generic, from what I hear.

* EDIT: Actually, it's possible that voiceovers are only available in German though. I was under the impression that it's been fully translated into English, but maybe that doesn't include the voiceovers, so you might have to play with German voiceovers and English subtitles. The text should be translated, in any case.

If we're looking at all the pros/cons, it's of note is that NV is a much, much smaller game than Oblivion. The exploration aspect is significantly less in NV.
Thank you soo much guys for the replies! btw did u guys think 40% is enough for these old games?

Depends on your PC specs. If you have a rig that can shoulder the game with multiple modifications and not freeze/go BSoD, then Oblivion might be the better option. If you want/can run just the base game without (m)any mods, pick Fallout New Vegas.
Another thing to consider is whether you're into post-apocalypse setting or generic-fantasy-with-tES-elements one.

Having played and finished both games, I say F:NV is the best thing that's ever happened to Fallout since it was sold to Bethesda. Oblivion is... not a bad game, but too generic and not without its issues (e.g. after certain level random bandits in ruins will wear daedric gear that's supposed to be hard to obtain and tricky to manufacture), but mods make it good enough: the other redeeming feature of the game is Shivering Isles DLC - it's actually fun and well-made.

Depends on how much you want them, and to what conditions. The prices are fair for what you get, if you end up enjoying the games. Generally, Bethesda's prices are a bit higher even for the old games because of their popularity, so you rarely see them go down to 75%. They have been cheaper on GOG before, but only slightly (maybe 50%?), while on Steam they are usually between 60% and 70% off, I think? On GOG you get DRM-free installers and don't need any online client to install or play (Galaxy is optional), on Steam you need the Steam client for both.

My friend, it's not hard at all. New Vegas is a vastly, vastly, vastly better game than Oblivion - and also than any & every other game that was ever developed by Bethesda.

New Vegas has good writing, deep & well-developed characters, a multitude of different ways to complete most of the quests, and plenty of player choices that affect how the characters behave & how the story plays out. It's pretty much everything you could want in an RPG.

In contrast, Bethesda-developed games, including Oblivion, have little to none of that; they are lackluster at best.

It's like comparing a Witcher game to a Diablo game...in that analogy, New Vegas would be the Witcher game and Oblivion would be the Diablo game...except that Diablo actually has entertaining gameplay whereas Oblivion and/or other Bethesda-developed games does/do not.

Fallout New Vegas is an entertaining game where exploration and interaction with the NPCs actually is fun. It's much better than Fallout 3 - which basically was Oblivion set in a postapocalyptic future. Oblivion, in turn, was mostly a tech demo for an amazing graphics engine (at it's time). But not much of a game. It feels empty, generic and repetitive.

So, if you have no strong preference in setting (fantasy vs. post-apocalyptic SciFi), get FNV. It's a much better game.

The only thing Oblivion has going for it is, that it has tons and tons of mods, including very good total conversions. Nehrim, for example, is a full game that is much better than Oblivion itself and is a free mod.
You don't really mention why you are interested in each one, but my favorite of those two is New Vegas. The story and skills and rpg elements are more interesting than Oblivion.

Oblivion has more of a traditional fantasy world, with maybe slightly better close combat than New Vegas, and a more generic fantasy story. They are both good.

Do you prefer weird sci-fi wild west or epic medieval fantasy?

FYI at least for the mean time, Oblivion and New Vegas on Steam are still drm free. Fallout 3 on Steam used GFWL and is a headache. I think Morrowind was also drm free, but not sure.
