tinyE: This freaks me out: miniature donkeys live forty years which means odds are they are going to be the ones putting me down.

What you said was weird, even for you, and you are weird.
Yes, my cat Janis had a stroke around April last year, I took care of her as best as I could for months (she was put down October 22nd, last year), but she got worse and worse, and eventually there was nothing else to do, by the end she couldn't even eat by herself. :( She kept me company for 16 years, it still makes me cry every time I remember her.

That's actually one of the reasons my grandfather doesn't want any pets anymore, he's afraid of them outliving him.
She's still here, some meds for pain, the vet said we should hope that they take care of the pain as she passes, otherwise it is euthanasia probably tomorrow.
She just passed.

See you guys tomorrow. :(
I've had my birds die in my hands... It's a very very sore wound still.

I've never had to make that choice about my pets. About other animals? Yeah. More than once a cat has come who has cancer, or feline aids, or on the edge of death, and all we can do is make them comfortable, or put them down at the vet's office. And we don't want to do it.

Try to take care. It will hurt for a long time, and when you're ready you'll let it go, at least the pain for a while.
Went through the same thing last year. Different condition, same outcome. Feeling a bit choked up just writing this.

I'm sorry for your loss.

TinyE has 3 pet donkeys. He's saying, in a joking way, that his donkeys are probably going to outlive him.
Most people outlive their pets, not the other way around.

neurasthenya: It sucks, but perhaps that would be the best decision atm. :'(

Goddammit, fuck cancer.
I'm very sorry you have to face such a decision. That time will come for my wife and me, and just to imagine it...
There are no helpful words to say but I wish you well, in time.

I "sanctioned" my first cat Umka to be euthanized, it was done in my house. When the doctor left I cried out loud for several minutes, it was a disaster. From that moment I can't even think of having another pet, still can't resolve my inner confict: he was 16 years old, but he could have lived longer...
My dog had to be shot a few years back. He could barely breathe. It sucked. I got drunk afterwards.
My cat had lost half of her tail and became blind on one eye, it looked bad for a while, but she got better and can still kick rat ass.
I've had to put down 3 cats and 3 dogs, I've had one cat get killed, had to give a dog away in extremely shitty times, and I watched my three rats pass, one while having a heart attack but he was very old for a rat. I've had other pets when I was younger as well that died naturally, and my sister has had rodents and a guinea pig that have passed.

I didn't cry for every pet I lost, sometimes it's just so numbing that I don't feel anything on the surface even though deep inside I'm sad they're gone. I probably sobbed the hardest with my rats as I just drank the rest of the night.
