The Skyrim total conversion mod Enderal: Forgotten Stories has just been released. Enderal was initially released in 2016, and Forgotten Stories has been in development since then to revamp the mod with additional questlines that had been planned out but needed quite a bit more time to actually put into the game. Although this is a mod, it's been released through Steam for easy installation and updating, and is free to all owners of Skyrim.

Although this is technically a mod, it's a completely different game from Skyrim, with a similar scope to Skyrim and other Elder Scrolls games, and professional level production quality, including full voice acting (with some very skilled voice actors). If you enjoy open-world RPGs like the Elder Scrolls series I'd highly recommend trying this game out.
Note that to download this stand alone edition of the mod you MUST own the original Skyrim release on Steam... NOT Skyrim SE

1. What is Enderal?
Enderal is a total conversion for TES V: Skyrim: a free game based on Skyrim's engine. It features a new game world, complete with different regions and dungeons and its own lore and story. It offers an immersive open world, all for the player to explore, overhauled skill systems and gameplay mechanics and a dark, psychological storyline with multi-faceted and believable characters.
You can check out some details and background info about Enderal and its predecessors on our website[sureai.net].

2. When will Enderal be released?
Enderal was already released in summer 2016 and will be re-released on Steam on February 14 2019.

3. How will the Steam installation of Enderal work?
First and foremost you will need a legal copy of Skyrim Classic or Skyrim Legendary Edition in Steam (no official DLCs needed).
It doesn't need to be installed, it's enough to own it.
Now simply download Enderal via Steam and launch it and you are ready to go!

Enderal will not work with Skyrim Special Edition (SSE). We might be able to port Enderal to SSE once development and bugfixing is finished, we simply can't split forces now.

4. In which languages will Enderal be released on Steam?
Localizations for other languages will be available as soon as we send out the files to the localization teams and they have finished their work. This means that most likely only the English and German version will be available on release and other versions will be added later.

5. Which features will be possible due to Steam?
The Steam installation allows for a lot of cool, new features:
Easy and fast download, install and update directly via Steam
Enderal will have own game directory and won't share .ini files with Skyrim
Own save game directory and enabled Steam Cloud for save games
Build-in ENBoost and other stability fixes
Possibly Steam achievements for Enderal

But the most interesting point is "Forgotten Stories" that will be included in the Steam release of Enderal.

6. What is Forgotten Stories?
Forgotten Stories is a free DLC/Add-On/Expansion pack for Enderal that will add content cut from the initial release version.

It also adds a new, hidden ending and new classes built around crafting rather than combat skills.

Make sure to read through the announcement[forum.sureai.net] in our forums.

7. Why is Enderal not on the Steam Workshop but has its own Store page?
An installation via the Steam Workshop would mess around with your original Skyrim installation. The Store page allows to be a sperate installation, independent from Skyrim.

8. I want to play the main content of Enderal before it's going to be released on Steam - how to install it?
Head over to the Enderal website[enderal.com] and follow the installation steps. If you are uncertain about a step, we recommend to check out either of these installation tutorials:
English Installation Tutorial by Gopher
English Installation Tutorial by GamerPoets
German Installation Tutorial by GameStar

Make sure to have Skyrim Classic or Skyrim Legendary Edition installed, Enderal does not work with Skyrim Special Edition yet.
If you encounter issues during the installation or update process, please have a look at this wiki page[en.wiki.sureai.net] or create a thread in our support forum on our website.

9. Is Enderal moddable as Skyrim is?
Yes, but ...

10. Will my mod setup for Skyrim work with Enderal? / Will my mod setup for Enderal work with the Steam version (+ Forgotten Stories)?
In terms of texture improvements, Enderal is already heavily modded from the get-go. It also already comes with SkyUI, SKSE and many more mods, so check out the credits.txt for a full list. Enderal also alters a lot of Skyrim's game-play mechanics and even introduces new features.

Every mod that is specifically designed to alter an existing Skyrim record won't work most likely. There is a mod category for Enderal on the Nexus as well as a Compatible Mods Spreadsheet.
Still, a little warning: these mods might not be updated to the newest version of Enderal, be careful and read the descriptions!

If you've got a good mod setup working, you might wonder if you will be able to use it with the Forgotten Stories DLC installed. Forgotten Stories will change quite some aspects of Enderal, especially the crafting skills as well as interweaving new quests with old quests.
We recommend to check out Enderal: Forgotten Stories without mods first and add later upon it.

11. Will I be able to play Forgotten Stories with my old saves?
We highly recommend starting a new playthrough to get the best, full and most bug-free experience. Generally speaking, old saves can be loaded but some major content can't be experienced due to technical reasons.
We won't be able to fix bugs that are caused due to the "age" of a save.

12. Will Forgotten Stories be playable without having Enderal on Steam?
No, the Forgotten Stories DLC will be only available via the Steam Installation of Enderal due to technical difficulties. We will not update the installation packages on NexusMods, ModDB, etc. We will leave them as they are, so the current installation method will still be available after the Steam release. However, we won't be able to support it any further. We highly recommend using the Steam version as soon as it's available.
These non-Steam installation packages might get updated at the very end of the development cycle, no promises though.

13. It has been a few months since the last update for Enderal, do you guys still work on the "old" content?
True, it has been a while since the last update because we wanted to focus on the new content. Nonetheless, we've been working on polishing the released content further.
Here you can find a changelog[forum.sureai.net] of everything that has been fixed, adjusted or changed since the last public patch (1.2.5.0).

14. I've encountered a bug - what shall I do?
First of all, make sure that the bug isn't caused by any additional mods that you have installed. If you are rather unsure if you encountered a bug or feature, don't hesitate to ask in the Community Hub, our forums or Discord.
The best place to report a bug to is our bug tracker[sureai.net]. Click "Report Issue" in the top right corner and fill the form. Please always attach a save game (.ess file and .skse file) that was created before the bug happened and describe to us how we are able to reproduce the bug.
Keep an eye on the ticket if we need further information regarding the issue or create an account at the bug tracker and report it while being logged in, you will get email notifications about every action that will be performed on your report.
Keep in mind that we are only so many active developers and we can't reply to every ticket immediately. Please be patient.

15. Am I allowed to use assets that have been used in Enderal for my own mods (or games)? Do I need your permission?
We can't give a general answer to these questions because not every asset was created by us but some were borrowed from other Skyrim mods (and other games) or were bought from external sources.
Please write us a direct message about the asset you want use or use the contact forum on our website, so we can either grant or deny permission.

16. Does SureAI have other Social Media accounts?
Yes, we do have some:
Facebook[www.facebook.com]
Twitter
YouTube
Steam Group
Enderal subreddit
Enderal Discord[discordapp.com]

17. Is there an option to donate?
Yes, there is. Donations help us to cover basic expenses[sureai.net], such as server maintenance.
You can also support Nicolas (writer) on Patreon[www.patreon.com] if you want more stories.
Sheet Music by Marvin Kopp can be found here[marvinkopp.musicaneo.com].

I'm not sure whether I should be happy about this or despair ... XD

I'm halfway through the old version and I don't really like replays. Wish I had known they were working on overhauling it, so I would have put off playing it until now. :(

What I didn't like as much as in the predecessor Nehrim for Oblivion is that enemies in Enderal respawn in areas you've cleared already, somewhat decreasing the sense of progress and making it harder for me to remember where I've been already. The soundtrack is impressive though.

Im in love with your content and also gain some knowledge from your blog.
Steam exclusive? If so,they can keep it.

Tauto: Steam exclusive? If so,they can keep it.
They have no other choice, as a Skyrim mod, which it still is, despite now being able to play both separately, they can only offer it on the same platform as the base game. As long as Skyrim is only available on Steam, it is either this or back to the mod version, but then you can have only one of them installed at the same time, as it effectively replaces Skyrim's original content.

Well, the chances of Gog releasing the base game here are not real good as it will probably be a special release that can't accommodate this mod.

If they released the Legendary Edition it would most likely be able to run the mod, but the mod version will not be updated with the new Forgotten Stories Expansion, at least not until they are done with everything else. However, the Legendary Edition is completely abandoned by Bethesda, and it can't even be found with the Steam search any more (but it can still be bought if you manage to get to the store page), so chances are they would release the Special Edition. But that seems even more unlikely, as they don't even release new titles on Steam any more, but use their own launcher. Well, maybe when Elder Scrolls 6 is released (not likely within the next 1-2 years at least) and the Skyrim SE is also no longer supported, they will release it here.
Enderal may also be ported to the SE at some point, but that's also not going to be very soon.

It's a dilemma:)
