Hello,
has anyone ever managed to enable EAX on Win7+ OSes and without a Creative SB card (via Alchemy)?

I found this program, but I'd like to know if anyone already tried it:

No, not yet, but I'll give IndirectSound a try and tell you my experiences with it.

I was looking for this some time ago, but sadly found no satisfying solution.

See if any of the above suggestions work for you.
I used it to get 5.1 surround with FEAR, so it's a nice program to have.

Cool, I'll try it with the Witcher 1, then.

phaolo: Thanks!
I tried with 3 games: Descent 3, Fear and Tron 2.0. Descent 3 was completely silent (absolutely no sound) with IndirectSound, Fear only had stereo sound (back speakers didn't work even though they should) and Tron did use the back speakers but they were so silent that you wouldn't hear anything from them unless you got very close. In other words: All three were unusable with IndirectSound.

And the first two games were even on the list of programs tested and found to be working with IndirectSound and thus should work correctly. That suggests that IndirectSound is very hardware dependent and doesn't work the same everywhere.

My personal opinion: Don't waste your time with it.

Damn, what a disappointment.. (-_-)
Thank you for the tests.

That is disappointing. EAX is what made thief a great game for me!

Yeah, for me too!
Luckly I played it on the old pc with Win XP and a Sounblaster plus EAX.
I also miss the "real" MIDI sound from it. The current soundfonts aren't very faithful.

Yes, all EAX versions work for me in all games that have it (that I have played/tried).
Windows 10 + X-Fi Xtrememusic + Logitech Z2300 + Alchemy
(worked in Windows 7 too)

Yeah, you still have a Creative card.
I'm not going to buy it just for EAX (I also use an external DAC).

Oops.. missed the 'without' part!
Creative still sell a few external USB cards that support the whole EAX range. My motherboard has one PCI slot (ASUS Z170A), but after this PC it'll be the end of my PCI card. I'll probably get one of those USB ones because I still have a bunch of EAX games in my backlog.

Oh, interesting.
And some of those are cheap.
Do they support MIDI too? (with the original sound)

I haven't researched it, but...
IMO, the software solutions are more interesting these days. Just load the Creative soundfonts* in them or even have a full MT-32 emulation, etc...

Or any other soundfont - there's a bunch of free ones out there that sound a lot better than the standard Creative soundfonts.

I don't know, I still haven't found a really faithful soundfont.
Even the Soundblaster's ones were different from its Ensoniq waveset (EAPCI8M.ecw).
