Video games continue to "evolve" (I'd rather say "degenerate"), as well as GOG continues to "evolve" - from FCKDRM to FCKPLR, apparently. -_-

mqstout: I got this response from misguided GOG support ("Ponczo") regarding this thread. GOG's apparently content with any cosmetic DRM. The fuckers.

All games available on GOG have offline installers available. We stay in touch with the partners and do our best to keep them up to date. However, video games continue to evolve with many titles offering online modes, cosmetics, and incentives for completing certain actions by players. This might be subjective, but as long as these additional features and rewards do not affect the single-player offline experience in a major way, we believe that the developers and publishers should be free to design and sell their games in a way they choose.

Wow. There you have it in official GOG words: the last pillar of GOG's original principles is officially cast aside. NO DRM*

Gersen: On Gog apparently the latest update broke some solo mode that use to be playable offline. On Steam there seems to be several issues with the conquest mode, which is the online / challenge mode.
avatar
KetobaK: Hope they fix it soon, the game looks really interesting!
We are on the case and working to solve it as soon as possible =)
avatar
Lifthrasil: As far as I see it, this is the worst case of DRM yet. Even worse than Nex Machina, where some levels are locked behind a Galaxy requirement. Now, in Northgard, it's the entire solo mode.
avatar
Time4Tea: I'm not sure if it's quite up there with GWENT (being an online-only game with microtransactions, made by CDPR themselves), but yes, there is no question it is DRM by any definition.

So, hang on ... if the SP mode for Northgard requires Galaxy, is there even an offline installer for it?
Yes, there is an offline installer but the solo mode won't start without Galaxy. That is a recent change introduced with the latest patch.

That is good to read. Please keep us updated about the progress in fixing this!

Ok. It's good to hear that GOG is working to fix this one, at least.

If GOG's new stance is that 'locked cosmetics are ok', it would also be good to see GOG actively addressing the other items on this list that go beyond just 'cosmetics' - e.g. Absolver, Dying Light, Carcassone Tiles and Tactics.

AFAIK, solo mode is not a synonym for single-player. There is also single-player campaign mode, which does not require galaxy.

I don't have the game, but I'm guessing solo mode is like skirmish mode in other games. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

P.S. For now, I think we may still assume that this simply be a bug introduced in the last patch.

Lifthrasil: And Nex Machina
Again all six worlds of Nex Machina and their levels are available offline, to unlock the last world you need to finish the fifth first ones at a higher difficulty level, it has nothing to do with uploading your high score online.

One user said that you can access to all the content offline, I don't have money right now to purchase the game and test it myself but I will keep it track and as soon as I can confirm one thing or the other I will do it!

There seemed to be some discussion back here of what exactly was locked:

avatar
Gersen: What do you mean "thus unlocking further levels" there are only 6 levels in this games and none of them are tied you your high score. Unless something new has been added recently.
avatar
real.geizterfahr: A quick look into the game's subforum gave me this (german) topic. There seems to be some online only "Arena mode" with 10 levels (worlds?), while the offline modes "Single World" and "Arcade" only have five/six levels/worlds.

I don't know anything about this game so I can't really say what's behind this.
There may be some confusion over whether the locked content is single- or multi-player. Gersen, have you played the latest patches (things can change, as we all know ...)?
So I was just reminded with Monster Train's DLC release today that it has a small cosmetic element that requires multiplayer (via Galaxy) to unlock. In game, you can unlock up to 8 cosmetic card frames with certain challenges. Two of these are done via online play (one: perform 3 daily challenges in a row; other: win 5 online matches total) that will change appearance of cards in your deck. You (and only you) see these in your hand while playing the game.

They are, however, trivial to enable by modifying the save game (a plain text .json file).

I finished the game sometime ago, I don't know if it was with latest patches but the game hasn't been updated since 2017 apparently. I might try to replay it from scratch (as my save already has all levels unlocked) but apart from one person here nobody ever complained about something being locked online so I kind of doubt it's something that has some changed recently.

The Arena mode mentioned in your quote is the multiplayer / online mode. And its level are the same level than single player just with some specific objectives.

Just..wow..yikes.

How about you stay true to DRM-free and ..idk...maybe NOT sell those games GOG, huh?

I think this is too important a statement to be left buried in this thread. You might want to create a dedicated thread to inform others of it. Perhaps also add the text of your original ticket. Assuming you're willing to suffer the ratings hit.
