kmanitou: Why is Steam better for day-one purchases?
avatar
nightcraw1er.488: It’s a far far bigger store. Devs consider the standard platform for gaming. Outside epic exclusives and perhaps Ubisoft, all games go there on day 1. GOG is not in that league, and probably for the better. We tend to get things later, cheaper, and working.
The two examples I gave were released on GOG and Steam the same day.

Yes and? Sure there have been a few which release at same time, croteam release serious Sam 4 here tomorrow at same time. That however is a tiny part of the market. A vast part of the market never even comes here at all. Then there are those which eventually turn up (beths) then there is the tiny fraction left which turn up at the same time as steam.
With all the good will in the world GOG is not n the same level as steam, or even epic.

kmanitou: Rally
This is 100% on you. This one has been known for A LONG TIME, quite publicly. GOG has done considerable gains in letting people know what's coming, when they can. Control was a different story, and probably on the publisher's side squelching the info until much later. And didn't Control release on GOG and other platforms [excluding its bullshit exclusive window] at around the same time, within a few hours?

ALSO this is entirely on you for a terrible lack of patience and allowing yourself to throw money away on DRMed storefronts in the first place.

Leroux: GOG is probably just a money-laundering operation to hide the fact that they're actually breaking bad and selling drugs online (fast) or so. ;P
What do you know, they also sell the tools to make them yourself at home. For example: https://www.gog.com/game/moleksyntez (the evidence lies in the first screenshot).
I agree with the OP. GoG really could do a much better job surfacing news on releases and upcoming releases. There are actually many releases that never get news on their home page either in the slides at the top or the news articles. You see it in the "new " and "upcoming" tab but the default is "best selling" so it really hides things from people and "new". But "upcoming" doesn't really show surprise releases (at least I don't think it does -- I honestly don't look at it often).

IMHO, they should have a dedicated "new & upcoming releases" section". They can dump the "featured" section. Does anyone even see that anymore? I suspect most people are habituated to ignore it since it never changes.

StingingVelvet: There has to be a reason games like Control go to Steam a short bit ahead of GOG. It's not DRM either, because Control was DRM free on the Epic Store a year ago. Perhaps they're just focused on getting the Steam version out the door and GOG is understandable a secondary concern, or perhaps they have a deal with Steam for front page promotion. Who knows. At least with Control we knew it was coming, others like Greedfall you don't.

Though lately it is pretty easy to guess which games might come here quickly depending on the publisher. EA, Ubisoft? No chance. 2K? Maybe. Focus Home Interactive or THQ? Probably.
I believe it's something to do with how Steam's "popular games" algorithm works and devs (whether correctly or incorrectly) think that they will chart higher if they try and concentrate all their sales on Steam around the initial release. If they release on GOG at the same time there are probably some customers that could go either way. By denying GOG the "launch buzz", those floating customers will go for Steam. GOG is left to mop up the die-hard anti-DRM folks and some of the late buyers.

I'm not sure what the catch is with the question?

If you scroll down on the openings page a bit you have the discover part of the site if you scroll down about almost a page length with tabs such as popular new and upcoming, If you have facebook just to follow your favorite pages such as strategy gamer, rock paper and shot gun and gardening 101 you can follow gog too you know and all the games will line up quite nicely

In games you see most people completely go crazy using 150 % of their brain capacity through sheer power of will but when it comes to game releases they go : uuhhhhhh what's up doc ?!

Good thought, being in more people's recommendations and the top sellers list sounds like a very plausible reason.
Thank you all for the discussion and the various opinions. I check GOG less and less and wait for the seasonal sales, so it's good to get a feel from the regulars. I'm not sure why buying on Steam or Fanatical makes me "impatient", "slow" or "derp", I simply forget that GOG might get a new game at release and the information is not always obvious. The games work just as well on other platforms anyway.

I'm not a fan of any particular store, I'd just choose this one more often if it were more transparent.

Good thinking about publishers trying to get more sales from Steam through various methods, I'll keep that in mind.

kmanitou: Just recently, I bought Control elsewhere and I just found out two hours before launch that Art of Rally is coming out here on day one, and it's not even on the front page or the upcoming tab. I sure rebuy a lot of games here at a deep discount later to have the installer (even though GOG wants to call it a backup so that you'll use Galaxy just like Steam instead), but I could spend a lot more money here, honestly.
Control was announced 2 weeks before release on Aug 27th: https://www.gog.com/news/coming_soon_control_ultimate_edition

Art of Rally was announced 3 months before release on June 23rd: https://www.gog.com/news/coming_soon_art_of_rally

If you don't follow GOG on social medias, maybe it's best upon checking GOG to click on upcoming tab - show more to see the list of all upcoming games at that moment.
I dont know if you guys knew but their staff was about 450 like 2-3 years back and now they say 1.1k. It almost looks like some kind of merger has happened. 1.1k is way to much for Cyberpunk. Blizzard's staff is 1k or so.

TomNook: Have you tried using the GoG RSS feed?
avatar
rtcvb32: How do you even USE an RSS feed?
I recommend Feedly or Inoreader. Both have great mobile apps, both can organize, sort, mark as read automatically and manage multiple sources. The day RSS goes away I stop using Internet. I can't imagine any other way to read regularly news from more than 1-3 sites.

I rate this post as the best answer. My fault for missing the information!
Shenmue 3 comes out before several of these games and various game versions, including certain titles that don't even have a release date yet.

Oh well, if the system works for other people...

Out of curiosity, does the upcoming tab also apply to AAA games? For example one of the last AAA games released was back in April or May and it was Deus EX Mankind Divided. Was that game shown on the upcoming tab before it's release on GOG, or does this only apply to indie games?
