I'm a old geezer who games only with physical media and I'll always be thankful for the help I received in getting to play my 'Stalker - Clear Sky' game without internet permissions (I bought it I own it, etc) but now I find that I can't activate my Microsoft FSX sim on my latest (strictly offline) PC as it's no longer supported. I bought a heck of a lot of add-ons for this over the years, including photo-real scenery - which cost a fortune. It's all useless now unless there's similar help available for this issue ??

Hm,...may have something to do with this?

lupineshadow: DVDs hold at most 4.7Gbs.

Given the size of some games nowadays, you would need a 10-DVD set just to install the game.
Standard DVDs, yes. But larger capacity variations exist, like a Double-Sided + Dual Layer DVD which has 17.1GB capacity.

Not to mention that games could always come on Blu-Ray. If movies can, why couldn't games?

Thanks but it's not that: I do get through Microsoft's automated telephone activation procedure by readfing out my product i.d. number; which is accepted. But then I'm told that this number isn't recognised as a Microsoft product. Anyway, thanks for looking at this, mate

I'm not going to stop calling you out on this spam. The first thread was a valid one, the second and third threads are obvious trolling.

Gudadantza: What I really miss of the phyisical releases and I considered the real point were the physical manuals. Not the boxes or the CD themselves. I understand that not every game needs a proper decent and big book/manual but depending the case it was a convenient goodie that will stand the test of time more that the dvd or the box or the CD. It was much more confortable to read a book than a PDF in a screen.

In fact in some sites like Matrix games for years they have offered two different versions of the game, one "cheaper" consistig in the code and digital installer and one consisting in a boxed copy with a color physical manual. More expensive.

But obviously they sell relatively complex wargames and simulators and the public probably give it more importance.

About the use of the GOG installer vs the original CD, well I use to install the GOG installer for convenience, it makes the game compatible and kills the possible DRM.
But there are cases were I do not own the GOG copy because my CD runs well and luckily the game is free of DRM. Honestly the latter are the lesser cases.
I've often grabbed an early CD-ROM issue of a game I already have on DVD just so I can enjoy the luxury of a weighty glossy manual in a well-made case containing 2, 3 or 4 dics - the way you might value a hardback book over a paperback. Must just be an acquisitive collector thing I suppose
Obviously GoG because current computers often dont even have a CD (DVD, Blueray etc) drive of some sorts anymore anyway.

GoG = zero pain.

P.s.: oh and by the way I own almost all my GoG games on CD (DVD etc) already. GoG is just more convenient.

They don't?

I'd never buy one without a DVD drive. I've got way too many games that would cut me off from. And I consider my physical collection to be rather unimpressive.

Fellow geezer, if almost 50 qualifies as such. I like GOG because you can download them using the offline downloads, and lately I've been backing them all up to bluray M-Discs. I wholly recommend bluray M-discs. I think it's worth the investment.

I had a crapload of bought games on cd's and dvd's way back in the day. Now I've been getting back (most) of my old collection from GOG. I love GOG personally because you can buy, download and have forever. Just like back in the day when you bought games on cd's or dvd's, and used no-cd cracks to try to preserve your optical drive.

So... these days... yeah, I prefer GOG. I just wish they would add two or three more games that I used to have, and I'd be a very happy camper.

There are USB optical drives, you know.

At present, physical or nothing. Currently you don't own a digital copy of anything, so don't spend money on it.

If/When they change it so you actually do own purchased digital goods, then i'll recheck on this. But at present, that's not the case.
Good job, a 600 day necro that should have stayed as dead as physical media is.

As for my opinion? My current computer doesn't have a physical media drive, my replacement computer doesn't have a physical media drive. Simple as.
I'm not a packaging guy. DRM free downloads is far better for me. I still buy movies on disc but that's only because there's no DRM free download alternative (that's legal).
Hasn't changed since last we saw this post...

... I will always prefer physical media...

... but...

... since physical media for PC games has almost completely died...

... I'll take DRM-free.
