Gothic - it's not a dungeon crawler but the main objective is still to escape a prison.

superstande: Yes, EotB doesn't feel too much like a Escape game... But there was either in the first or the sequel that I tried briefly, in the beginning of the game, the entrance to the place gets blocked, if memory serves... So it kinda feels like being stuck inside...
If you also include games in which there are only specific parts about escaping, not the whole story, then Arx Fatalis would count as well - you start it in a prison cell.* Also, the whole environment is very claustrophobic most of the time.

* The same goes for the beginning of Baldur's Gate 2 and Oblivion. And the total conversion mod Nehrim for Oblivion features a prison escape quest, too. (Actually, a lot of RPGs do.)

(Btw, I didn't realize just HOW messed up the forum has become. It's not just that you can't post "&" without quotation marks anymore, you also can't have two links in the same row, and posting too many quotes and links bears the risk of things going wrong for no apparent reason ...)

Wow. Arx Fatalis seems like a cool game. The atmosphere looks just right!
Maybe I've spent too much time with open-world games under the wide open skies, but there is a certain thrill in just being in this restricted world. And when finally, either in the end of the game or after a very long haul in the caverns or corridors or such, you get to come out, and see the outside world - that's also quite an exciting moment! :)
I remember playing Ultima 4 and 5 as a kid, being very bad at epic RPGs when those games first came out... Spending hours in some cave with that oppressing music.. And finally coming out... That was just a wonderful moment, when the music changed and suddenly there was light and the lands in all directions...

superstande: Though I meant PC games that would be available digitally.
Too bad, because I just remembered the Amiga game Flood, particularly noteworthy for its ending. XD

Well, there's actually a whole lot of games where the plot is about the protagonist trying to leave a certain place, but I guess it's often rather about the hero being stranded somewhere than a prisoner, so I guess that doesn't quite count?

Anyway, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is about escaping a prison. It was available on GOG but sadly isn't anymore.
I could mention the PlayStation 2 game Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter. Do note a few things about that game, however:

1. The save system requires the use of a rare consumable to make a hard save. Any review that doesn't mention this is bad.

2. The D-Counter is a sort of time limit, and it also means your use of dragon powers (which are very powerful) is limited. Any review that doesn't mention this is bad.

3. The developers decided to copy protect the save file (which counts as a form of DRM IMO), so you can't back up your save.

(Note that I haven't played that game, as those characteristics I mentioned were actually dealbreakers for me.)

Ha :) That was a nice game, had lots of fun with it in the 90s. Never got to the ending though.

Argh... Hey actually I have it :)
Wonder what went wrong there, another nice game not available for new shoppers.

Since it's based on a movie it's probably that the license has run out. But well, lucky you. :D

You can bot multiple links on the same line, but all of them after the first need a space at the beginning of the link text. (url=hattop://going.nowhere.fast) link text(/url)

Weird, but good to know. Thanks!

It's very simple and only 5 seconds long, but pretty mean: Spoiler for Flood.
