Yeah, sorry if this isn't such a great place for such a mundane, even undergroundy question...
I have been finding fascination in gaming involving or even revolving around the theme of Escaping A Dungeon.
In a wide sense of the definition - not just in fantasy but in sci-fi setting as well.
I'm playing Deadly Tower of Monsters, which while a wonderful game - I'm now about floor 25 which is a bit less than halfway - is sort of reverse Escaping A Dungeon...
Then I got into thinking old school games like Impossible Mission on C64, and the sequel.
"Another visitor, stay a while, stay forever!" :)

And now I'm interested in making a list and maybe even playing games that are about getting out of A Place.
Whatever the reason - may it be that the person got there by choice or was imprisoned... The latter though, has more appeal ;)

Anyone care to join in? (If anyone has read this far into the ramblings...)
Castle Wolfenstein
The Great Escape
Wow! Those bring back memories! :)
They were great... Thanks for the ideas!

Though I meant PC games that would be available digitally.
Might have to reinstall C64 Forever emulator just for the nostalgia.

How about its younger brother?

Tower of Guns uses an escape-ish storyline to its multiple stories, but they in no way affect gameplay: you're shooting and dodging like mad regardless of which random story it gives you. Fun game.
I think Spiderweb Software's Avernum fits into that category as well.

There are native PC versions of both of those games, and they are rather easily available digitally (see the Related Web Sites section of The Great Escape moby page).

Ah sorry, didn't see that section. Thanks again.
Say no more, say no more ;)

Cool! Thanks!
Avernum: Escape From The Pit does sound like a perfect fit for this sort of theme indeed!

Wishlisted many games now :)

Well, there is Wizardry 4 (but please play Wizardry 1 first, OK?). I should probably warn you that, aside from being very different from the rest of the series, Wizardry 4 has a reputation for being hard and sometimes unfair (MAKANITO comes to mind).
Prison Architect allows you to play a prisoner trying to escape.

Also:
The Escapists

Thanks also :)
I hope W3D is as terrifying as the original :) ...I had Amiga back in the 90s so I kinda missed it back in the day...

So you build a prison and then escape it, or is it a different prison? :D
Sounds fun!

I guess Eye Of The Beholder would fit here, but I've already completed it... And not sure if the sequels are as good...

In both Legend of Grimrock and Paper Sorcerer, you have been imprisoned in a dungeon that you must eventually escape from.
How about the two Ultima Underworld games, do they count? In the first one you do go deeper and deeper in the dungeons, but that is because you were locked there by the king and you will not be let out before you find the kidnapped princess Whatshername.

Also the second one... at least you are trapped (among with others) into a castle, but frankly I don't recall if you try to find your wait out, or only a way to remove the thingie that keeps everyone inside.

Ah, the great escape game on the spectrum, one of my all time favourites. Thanks for posting the link, I shall now have to check out this pc port you mentioned.
Edna and Harvey: The Breakout

Sanitarium

Stasis

To a certain extent, I think Bioshock might fit the description, too.

Isn't it more about the classic dungeon crawling, delving deeper into a place, instead of trying to get out? The sequel is pretty good, I recommend it; the third one is generally less liked. Both are about getting in though, not out.

Yes, rescuing Whatshername sounds like a good game and fits spot on! Thanks!
That's exactly what I meant. And I have them both, lost on the shelf between other games...

Thank you. Those all look cool...
Yes, EotB doesn't feel too much like a Escape game... But there was either in the first or the sequel that I tried briefly, in the beginning of the game, the entrance to the place gets blocked, if memory serves... So it kinda feels like being stuck inside...
