omega64: Do not play VH in Single Player.
You will die so frequently that's it's not even funny anymore.
Clearly balanced for MP.

Wouldn't recommend the first Torchlight as it's a bit bland/boring.

snowkatt: dungeon siege 1 and 2

of that list ?

..eeeh ..ehh .eeeh torchlight 1 or 2 ...i guess

omega64: Torchlight 1 spikes so hard in difficulty near the end. :l
i didnt care much for torchlight 1 either to be honest
also too grindy and too much like diablo
i just like it slightly better then the boring grindfest that diablo is

Breja: Path of Exile (yes, I know it's not among the options given, but it's great.
Yes, it's free so if you have time to invest and want 'advanced' character development this is a good one.

tinyE: diablo 2 is the greatest game ever
in madagascar maybe ;p
Diablo 1 and 2, Grim Dawn, Torchlight 1 and 2: all games I played through once and put aside. But I had great fun with all of them.

Diablo 3: played the heck out of it, I think it's the game I played the most in my library.

I have TQ and VH, I just haven't played them yet.

PoE is something I heard great many things about, but haven't played it yet. Still, I want to try, eventually.
I want to throw "Restricted Area" into the discussion. It`s an ARPG with a cyberpunk setting.
Diablo 2 is the undisputed king.

But I'll mention Depths of Peril since it's such an oddball.
I'd play PoE, but I'm annoyed by the online+DRM requirements :\
Dungeon Siege with Ultima V: Lazarus and The Ultima 6 Project total conversions.

Can't tell; its sacred.
I will second my love and bae <3 tinyE. Diablo 2 + LOD is the original, the king, the grandfather and the best (at least of this bunch). Due to history and nostalgia, i would also squeeze Diablo 1 + Hellfire here, in this tier, together with 2. They are very similar and 2 is an overhaul and an overall improvement, over 1. You will have an extra hard time finding Hellfire, though, the one and only legit, official expansion for Diablo 1, made by (now defunct) Sierra. It was never released after Sierra closed down and Blizzard never included it in the Battle Chest (or any other collections). Too bad, since it has a Bard, a Barbarian, a Monk, new quests, some gameplay enhancements, a ton of new items, 2 entire new areas that were also implemented in 2 from Blizzard itself and an interesting new boss.

Second place is in constant dispute between Torchlight series and Titan Quest/Grim Dawn. Personally, i put second place Victor Vran, because it is a very nice game, innovative, something both new and enjoyable that will get you rocking. Amazing game that one, in every sense.

Third place for me is Titan Quest together with Grim Dawn, they are from same people and very similar in style and all. In older times, Titan Quest was heralded as the single BEST diablo clone ever.

Fourth i put Torchlight. Well, some people were in diablo team, it tries to resemble some things from diablo, but honestly, it is not that good in execution. Motion lag, choppy movement, clunky responses from controls and lack of complexity (gameplay-wise), at least in 1 that i just finished for my first time, didn't excite me too much, to be honest. Now, i will also start 2, but i don't have my hopes too high, after 1...

Van Helsing i never played and i don't intend to. I don't like its style and artwork and i am not curious enough to try it out. I would prefer over it Grim Dawn and Victor Vran any day of the week. Finally, Diablo 3? There is no such thing as diablo 3. The original, pre-alpha stage of it from Blizzard North, before Blizzard disbanded them, was destroyed by Blizzard itself. The current "accident" named diablo 3, is an always online DRM shit, it had real money auction house for a long time, a feature that Blizzard abused to legally fleece the playerbase off their money with thin air (in-game items) in exchange (and even if they removed it, they already leeched lots of green already), resembles an MMO and has crappy artwork and style, nowhere reminding the old diablo series in anything at all... Let alone it is a tiny poop, that can never hope to hold a candle to either 1 or 2, plagued by consolitis and oversimplified, with lack of character customization, especially in stats and gameplay elements (that previous titles had).

My top 3 in no order of preference:

Diablo 2
Victor Vran
Torchlight 2

Titan Quest and Din's Curse go into the honorable mentions too.
PSO Episode I & II > Diablo > Diablo 2 > Torchlight 2 > Titan Quest: AE > Torchlight . Dungeon Siege

I haven't played tthe rest so I can't rank them.

PSO is best but single player is kinda boring and even split screen multiplayer improves it a lot.

Diablo II lacks the horror and atmosphere of the original. But in many ways it set many standards of the genre and it is unsurpassed in many ways.

Torchlight II has fun mechanics but incoherent and confusing story. Torchlight I has very boring environments.

Despite lack of random/procedural generation, Titan Quest also has very boring and unrealistic environments. No narrow corridors, no small rooms, no narrow doorways, always a wide open space to fight. So very repetitive, even by the standards of this genre. Considering the lack of random maps, maybe Titan Quest doesn't belong in this discussion at all.

Dungeon Siege is garbage.

I just ordered the Wii game Baroque a few days ago. The videos reminded me of the original Diablo: an action-roguelike, random dungeon crawling, darkness, horror themes. I expect good things. Maybe it is the Diablo successor I've been waiting for since 1996.

I've only played Diablo 1 & 2, Torchlight 1 & 2, Dungeon Siege, and Path of Exile.

Of those, the only one I wouldn't bother with is Dungeon Siege. So incredibly boring and bland. Never finished it.

Top picks would be either D2 or T2. I'd give the edge to T2. Perhaps it's just the fact I've played D2 so much that I can't even stand to look at it anymore.

The firsts in the respective series are both good, but sort of shallow. Good for one playthrough. Diablo 1 does some things better than its sequel, while the same couldn't be said for Torchlight, so if you're going to pick one, go with Diablo. It also has the best atmosphere of any of the mentioned.

Path of Exile is a mixed bag. The actual hacking and slashing is fun, and executed better than in any of the others, but the rest of it...ehhh, the devs tried hard to make it Different - the money (there is none! yay! good luck identifying your items now that you can't buy the friggin scrolls), the gems-are-skills-with-levels-and-synergies system, and that fucking passive skill tree that's so massive it's only good for inducing "WTF" reactions from your friends, otherwise cripples decision-making by being overwhelming and unwieldy... Oh, and you need to be online to play, I suppose. I'm fine with this because I'm playing it with a friend, but if you're planning on soloing, it's an annoying requirement.

I need to put more time into Din's Curse. That one also does things a bit differently, but without devolving into the different-for-the-sake-of-difference.
