Dalswyn: Their approach is more stick than carrot. We're talking about "Nice family... Would be a shame if the police visited them... daily..."
Implying they even have the decency to give warning, like a thief in the night, which is their very way, I'm not including a certain leaked list with 2million "gamers" within key positions of western corporations and government.

Enjoy that extra Tencent GO(OLA)G, I'm sure it was worth it.

WeirdoGeek: I can't even make the sarcastic joke. This just guarantees that China is once again going to get trolled with Winnie the Pooh memes and that this is going to cause way more of an uproar than simply releasing the game could ever hope to accomplish.

Welp, looking like I'm gonna be doing ALL my game shopping on Steam now...

dgnfly: Do what I do. wait till it's filthy cheap then buy it so they can't profit much of me. see no reason to support another corrupt online store before the other so you need to make it so they can make as little money off you as possible. I only buy old games and ignore the new ones cause GOG refuses to bring certain titles here so I see no need to buy from them if they don't support my choice of games.
That's already what I usually do, unless the launch discount is good and/or I REALLY want the game. Green Man Gaming is especially helpful in this area. This storefront was my main source for retro computer games. Keyword being "was".

A quick reminder, Devotion developers Red Candle Games have another excellent horror game currently available on Google Play and Steam:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/555220/Detention/

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.redcandlegames.detention

I've just grabbed it as, while I will no longer be spending money at GOG, I am very happy to support the developer through other means.
Should have stealth-released it without any announcement beforehand.
Oh well, I guess it will just take another couple years for everyone (including those alleged "many gamers") to forget about the non-troversy to get this released at last, then.

Mr.Mumbles: Must be nice to be brainwashed so completely. I can't imagine living in a country where one simple critique could put a person into so much deep shit. Hail, dictator Xi!
Maybe you should talk to some Chinese (not expats with a grudge, that's small minority) people once in a while. The mentality, the whole system of values is simply... different.

I wouldn't want to live like that and probably couldn't. I'm myself more of a loner who values freedom. But their views and values are different, and I respect that. Calling that "brainwashed" is... actually one sided to the point of brainwashed.

Thanks for mentioning that, I already had the game but not the OST so I've now grabbed that too.

WOW, first I learnt this week that ironically Cyberpunk 2077 is the first game I know off to not be 100% DRM free for all single player content (requires gog galaxy for my rewards to get in game single player content) and now bending the knee to communist china.

I hope the great... Xi Jinping is a big GOG fan as you have access to my reciepts and I wont be buying from you for the foreseeable future, depending how you handle this & CP2077 not being totally DRM free.

Detention is an excellent game. I would definitely recommend anyone here who hasn't played it yet to buy it and support Red Candle Games that way. Incidentally, it also deals with the themes of dictatorship and censorship during Taiwan's era of military dictatorship.

Now that Taiwan itself is democratic they get censorded by the CCP.

I used to encourage my friends to buy GOG over Steam when possible. Now I see no point.

I've been choosing GoG for games by default for the last few years as it looked like the best choice for longevity of keeping games available, updated, and running, but these missteps of late are really concerning and I may just go back to Steam for purchases. I'm not happy about doing so, just sharing my opinion on it.

It definitely is a bad move. All they had to do was make the game not available in their Chinese store. Problem solved. I get that you have to work with countries to get your games into their stores and marketplaces. Australia has some new censorship crap going on so GOG would have to follow that... for the Australian store. What you don't do is ban it all together because of one country.

Interesting, that GOG received "many messages" from gamers to not release this game, yet so far it's hard to find even one post supporting this decision. There or on twitter...

I'm so utterly sad with that. There were some things I didn't like on GOG, surely, but somehow even "pushing" Galaxy in every possible way or some releases of games being not entirely coherent with "drm-free" idea wasn't so annoying as this decision. I still has the bad taste in mouth due to GOG's decision in the past regarding Hatres*, but this... Eh, it's so depressing.

*(short recap - game was initially supposed to be released, developer has received initially clear signal from GOG that game is interesting and they're planning to release it - yet decision was changed, after some "journalists" have published "revelation" in polish press that one of the devs was seen on the photo in the t-shirt praising the anti-communist and anti-nazi partisan organization created during World War II in occupied Poland - this was supposed to be "shocking" due to "anti-communist" part)
