Cheers.

It seems a new Descent fan game is in the works, and it already looks and plays fantastic (according to the video). Since i haven't seen this posted here before, here's a little heads up - since this definitely deserves more attention:

Thanks for the post, Solei! I'm a huge fan of Descent series, so this is great news for me. The game looks great, and I'm really looking forward to playing it once it is finished.
Descent 3 trailer still gives me goosebumps.

There is light at the end of the tunnel.
wow looks great :)
You know, I don't think a remake interests me much. Descent 1/2 had their source codes released and the Rebirth source ports are pretty much perfect for playing the game. Maybe if Descent 1/2 didn't have their code released and we were stuck with DOSBox versions this project might make sense, but we can play Descent on modern windows at 1920x1080 or beyond right now, what's the point of a remake? It's like if someone tried to remake DOOM in Unreal Engine, why even bother the vanilla version running in GZDoom will always be superior.

A_Future_Pilot should be even more happy.

Well, while I agree that Descent 1 & 2 are really fine and great as they are, I think the genre as a lot of untapped potential (be it with gameplay elements like weapons or event level design). I am listening to some tracks through the link provided, I just regret it doesn't sound as 'Industrial' as Descent soundtrack. This is the kind of game where the music is one of the most important thing I think, no other game than Descent is as much dependent on its sound assets (guitar hero-likes and Crazy Taxi have a lot to do with the music, but every sound in Descent has a profound feel and some 'meaning').

That I can agree with, but it would be kinda cool if the team worked on a remake that differs from the first two and make it almost feel like the Descent 4 we never got.
Not made by Bethesda, hooray! :)

It's hard to create a proper modern remake for DOOM, because any attempt at 3D modeling the enemies would fail to turn life on the sprite-based originals in our minds. And how would the levels be updated? Just add details to the original walls, ceilings and floors or totally change the architecture?

With Descent the benefit from updating the visuals is attainable without needing to rethink the levels and the early days of 3D are usually far less appealing to the eye today than any well made 2D sprites.

I'm playing Doom1+2, Heretic, Hexen and Duke3D with HQ-Texture packs but I hate the 3D models that are available and would like to have HighRes sprites for Enemies and items for those games. Some guy started making some for Doom2 years ago but never finished those. :/

Not really the visuals I'm talking about, it's the code - the actual gameplay. I don't think any amateur fans are capable of creating something as good and tight as the originals, heck I don't think many professionals these days could.
COOL! Now I can get my ass kicked with WAAAAAY better graphics! :D

Seriously, I love the series but how much meth do you need to be on to be an elite player!? After a few beers I can't even get passed the load screen. :P
Dat trailer.. I'm drooling already XD

I only played to Descent 1, however, and I still have to buy the trilogy here on GoG.

I hope that the dev will create a good single player too, D1 was great but a bit repetitive after ~30 levels with the same objectives and closed spaces.

P.S: also, those ships in the new version will need to appear less like toys :P

Sorry for thread necro, but it seems like Interplay have sent a C&D to the devs working on this non-commercial fan project:

Interplay Bastards. I seriously considered to buy the Descent series here, but from now on, everything Interplay is on my black list. Really hope they go bankrupt and the ip ends up in the hands of a better software house.
