Are there any other GOG games that automatically connect to the internet and/or check for pre-authorized game codes with a server? Also surprised how Ciris didn't even flinch when suggesting that was something that GOG considers DRM-Free. There could be many more examples of them loosely interpreting it just to get more games to the catalog now and we may not even know it. :O

Popcorn anyone? :>
If the game is not currently DRM free then it should be pulled from sale until the issues are resolved.

blakstar: I thought I'd post an extra bit of information, and hope I didn't miss any comments after reading through this topic quickly!

I know most of the comments here refer to the Windows version, but I thought I'd give the Linux version a try after reading much of this topic.

It would seem that the Linux version works OK with the pre-authenticated key when connected to the Internet. It displayed "Authentication Status: Unknown" when disconnected, however it seemed to be OK, as far as I could tell, but I must admit I didn't test it much.

No, I'm not suggesting that people try to use the Linux version, but I thought, since it's available for both Windows and Linux, that it was worth mentioning.
What does it say at the bottom when you are connected? On windows it says "key revoked". If the Linux version is fine, my guess is that it's been packaged with a different key that the dev hasn't revoked yet.

OK, just double-checked both Windows and Linux versions, and they are using different keys.

My Windows version was showing "key revoked", as mentioned earlier, but switched to "Authentication OK" when I tapped in the same key being used by the Linux version.

Ah, thanks for checking. So the reason the Linux one is fine is probably just because the key hasn't been revoked (yet), not because it doesn't phone home or anything.

This + GOG should issue a refund to whomever wants it.
Great. Another game to add to the 'don't buy' GOG exception list.

Except I already bought it back who knows when.

Just like I bought Walking Dead here on sale - then later read about it 'phoning home' during gameplay or something. Haven't verified that one yet.

But it's looking more and more like - don't buy ANY newer game (or any game no matter its age - looking at you, F.E.A.R.) until I verify it doesn't actually have DRM or phone home - because GOG's not going to tell us. And - I'm probably too lazy to 'verify' each title - so will end up just not buying newer stuff.

/sigh

Well, perhaps they thought it's one time check and didn't pay attention to calling home until the first time invalidation happened. But it certainly isn't 'now' since Ciris confirmed previous cases of deactivation.

Someone make a list of 'GOG games with DRM' please....
While I don't agree with this and I do think GOG needs to fix this as quick as possible. I think some people in this thread are blowing this way out of proportion. The simple fact is GOG probably removes the DRM from most games themselves because devs aren't going to waist the time for old games and without having direct access to the code this is going to be a lot of times tricking the DRM into thinking it's either disabled or that you are complying with the DRM. This will effectively make the game DRM free so long as you make sure issues like this can't happen where the consumer is effected.

GOG's mistake here (assuming it was them and not the dev) was doing this in a way that the developer could make invalid by simply banning a key. Tricking the DRM is fine but it needs to be a permanent solution.

The first reported invalidation occurred in 2012; the same year that the game was released on GOG.
