Not sorry for their poor management choices but it's still sad news for me. I have only played The Path so far but I thought it was a pretty unique and enjoyable game.
A lot of these games are neither games nor art. They're what your left with if you strip down a quality game or can't be bothered finishing it.
It's like removing everything except the first section from say GK 3 and then calling it an artistic statement to foreign hotels.

If that's how they really feel, they have no business being game developers.

Also, I took a quick look through their Twitter. They literally refer to the "brutish masses" at one point. They're like a sick parody of what everyone thinks "artsy" developers are like.

Parody implies it is done tongue-in-cheek. This... this is reinforcing the negative stereotypes and epitomizing them.
....
I can't..
....
So... now they also managed to fail at a nice departure from the gaming scene.
Well done...
*facepalm*

EDIT: wait, where is that tweet? I don't see it on their page O_o

It was one of their tweets when the "announcement" went out (21 June) thus why I accidentally mixed the "tone" of their tweets with their article in my OP. Lots of popcorn have been eaten that night ^o^ I'm surprised it took so long for people here to catch up on their tweetfeed :o)

It begs the question that if they had sold a million copies, would their opinions of their customer base have changed much. Given the recent outbreak of totally political-oriented scandals in gaming and gaming journalism, I'd say probably not. There seems to be an undercurrent of people in the gaming world who have no desire to make, edit, review, or even play games. I guess they're just here for the lulz. Shit, they don't need to tank an entire game studio for that. Game design is expensive. Twitter flame wars are priceless.

EDIT: HE MENTIONED THE MUSIC MACHINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cool article.
And congrats for the shoutout ; )
Wait, so they just made a big budget game about how bad commercialism is and failed financially with it and now they hate their whole world?
Well. I'll eat my face.

This is literally one of the most blatant real-world examples of "sour grapes" I have ever seen.
Coincidentally, I just discovered and started playing Tale of Tales' games a couple of days before they announced their departure from the industry, so it was kind of a shock.

Having now played through most of their titles, excluding Sunset, it is a little sad to see them go. I didn't always 'enjoy' the games per se, but every one made me think and contemplate it for days later, which can't be said for most games. I can certainly see why some people loved them so. I can also see why their work wasn't a mainstream hit either.

I think Adrian Chmielarz of Ethan Carter fame wrote a really good article on it
The devs have cooled down a bit and have written an article "Our love for videogames" about their general inspiration on and off videogames:
