Hey guys

I've recently started to get into D&D as well as other Tabletop RPGs. I'm loving it so far, but are there any decent D&D Co-Op PC games? From what I've seen from the majority of D&D PC games available on GOG, they seem a little weak.

Most of them don't seem to have a detailed character creator
Most of them don't seem to be co-op
Most of them seem to have a very linear story
Most of them seem to be only single player

I'd love to have the option to play a D&D game (or something similar), but with all of the fundamentals.

None that I know of.

Well, you could host or join a virtual table top game using software such as Roll20 (https://roll20.net/). That's essentially enhancing the classic table top experience with digital/online/social media features -- which seems to be what you're ultimately looking for, based on your "love to have" features. But keep in mind this is not a "canned" (automated) game experience -- you would need to have a live DM to create and drive the campaign and story.

As far as PC games with a pre-build campaign and automated DM...

Neverwinter Nights is not turn-based, but it could potentially meet most of your other criteria. It does the standard D&D dice rolling behind the scenes, and you can optionally show those dice rolls as they happen. It has a very robust character creation system featuring most of the 3.5 Edition rules. It doesn't allow co-op on the same computer, but does allow co-op between multiple PCs. And it has an amazing editor that allows creating full campaign worlds. There are a plethora of user created campaigns available, some of which are very non-linear and open-ended. While the game is real-time, it can be paused at any time -- allowing you to make tactical decisions in the heat of battle with your teammates or just stop and role-play for a bit.

Temple of Elemental Evil may be worth considering too. It is turn based, uses the 3E D&D "dice rolling" rules, has a character creation system featuring many of the 3E D&D rules, and could easily allow for "hot seat" co-op on the same PC with friends. However, I'd hesitate to say that it's campaign is non-linear. There's some flexibility in where you go and what you do, but the campaign does have distinct "choke points" -- places that you have to go to or events that you have to complete to progress the story.

The closest I can come up with is Neverwinter Nights 1 or 2, if you can find yourself a good open world multiplayer module or online server to play on. But: even though there are dice rolls and turns, the combat is handled in real time, and there is no local co-op, only online co-op.

Or you can play open custom designs for Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures (included in Forgotten Realms Collection 2) and take turns during the turn-based combats (e.g. you play 3 characters, your friend plays 3 characters).

I don't know of any D&D game that comes with integrated local co-op mode. Also, keep in mind that there are many different editions of D&D that differ significantly from each other. The 1st or 2nd edition (A)D&D of Unlimited Adventures is different than NWN 2's 3.5 which is different from D&D 4e or 5e.

The D&D Computer Games are mostly semi-canonical single player adventures where you control the entire party. IMHO, the earliest games are best.

NWN is excellent and is/was like an early MMORPG with a MUD / BBS feel. The cool thing was customization and finding awesome servers with committed regular players.

Are you talking about the 2002 game or the one from 1991?

I do remember trying to Install 1991 AOL game and running it on my clunker and then giving up.

Back in Dial-up days: We settled for local BBS. Couldn't run stuff like Ultima Online, and AOL Games with Graphics.
