Has anyone played this? I saw the sale, and wow! that is a great price. But, I am not familiar with the series. Is it turn based? Single player style or one that allows the character to bring along NPCs? Also, a review said the PC controls were not great. Is that accurate, or not really? I do not have a controller, nor intend to purchase one.

Thanks for any opinions you may have, good or bad!

its a third person action game with some additional styles for other segments. you can upgrade your character.

the controls weren't terrible except for some boss fights and the flying sequences - so yeah, a controller might be a good idea.

personally really enjoyed it unil said boss fights etc. plan to replay now I myself have a controller.

hope that helps!

Wow, that seems to be quite a misunderstanding. It's not an RPG at all, it's a 3D action game. There's tons of melee combat, platforming/climbing, environmental puzzles etc..

Don't know if you have any interest in that kind of game but it's one of my favourite games ever. I'm not a big fan of the sequel, though (which is a bit more similar to RPGs, though, and features loot and quests and whatnot, and is almost comparable to MMORPGs... without the multiplayer :P).

Third person hack n slash. It's ok but gets old very fast.
I guess I did misunderstand the game, and will considering something else then. Thanks for all the replies. I will find something else then! I always try to pick up a few games to support GOG during these sales. It's a win win. I get some games I would not normally purchase at a great price, and GOG gets the revenue for it.
It is hack and slash, action adventure puzzle game, real time, much like Devil May Cry. Especially 1 is a great game that does it right in every sense.
Pretty awesome game in my opinion, jeepers you should use a controller though, first boss is the hardest in the first game, so you will need a controller for the extra mobility it will give you.

The nearest comparison I could make is a Zelda like experience, but quite violent, but great puzzles and secrets that reward exploration , The ending is very cool, it wraps up the game and hints at the sequels in a very cool way.

Darksiders 2 is probably better, but I do think that the experience of playing them in sequence (while not necessary) is the best way to go.
I think the LoadingReadyRun crew described the original Darksiders as a Legend of Zelda game in the guise of a God of War clone. They gave it quite a bit of praise.

Well, I guess on PC Soul Reaver, PoP: Warrior Within and Shadowman are quite comparable, more recently the Arkham series and the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow games. To my understanding particularly the latter are quite similar, haven't played them yet, though.
If you're thinking about getting Darksiders 2 be careful because it has the worst audio quality I have ever heard in a game. The game was unplayable for me because of this.

Sounds like something was wrong on your system. It's been a while since I've played it but I don't remember the sound quality being bad at all.

It definitely wasn't my system because I played the game once on a friend's console and found that the audio quality was comparable to Youtube videos set to the lowest quality. Other games on his console had fine audio and when I watched an episode of a Darksiders 2 Let's Play the audio quality wasn't better.
Maybe it's an issue only consoles have and the sound isn't compressed as much on the PC version?

I can't fire it up right now but I just watched a video (of the PC version). There's always a chance that the audio was messed up by bad recording but indeed, it doesn't sound too good, something's off. It's far from being terrible but I see how it may irritate some people with certain sensibilities.

But admittedly even the first game sounded "off" to me at first. It tried sounding huge, with many sounds being meant to sound ridiculously powerful while certain frequencies were kinda too weak. I remember it being unpleasant to me at first but I got used to it. I guess it may have been the same in case of the second game for me.

I definitely didn't enjoy the hour I played because of the sound so I figured I should warn the OP.

Regarding C:LoS 2 specifically (LoS 1 is quire a different beast more like God of War), They are similar in their boss fights and puzzles, but taken as a whole (and I love both LoS games), The Darksiders franchise is better all 'round IMO, they are a nice mix of fun and gravity with better and tighter gameplay and more fleshed out characters (Death is really cool).
