The really bad part is when you have to sit there and go, "Wow. I chose to waste my time on that. That's time I'm not ever getting back, and I spent it on that..."

Hahaha! That is a good way to do it... And how lucky for that girl :-P

I had a teacher that simply used a hammer. He only had to do it once, and nobody's phone rang again all semester :-)

Sounds like she lucked out in that case. The professor's approach doesn't surprise me, figuring it'd get extremely frustrating in a hurry to attempt teaching while phones go off continuously.

Yep. It doesn't happen that often, but when it does, it's really annoying, and we have small classes, so it's very noticeable. This professor has a weird streak of humor, though, so I tend to be careful in his classes anyway, because you never know what's going to happen. He's got this feud going on with my study advisor, in which they'll try to ridicule each other in front of students by photoshopping each other's faces onto statues and that sort of thing.

Hi. Actually that sounds funny - but indeed a bit weird :).

IIRC the confiscation of phones only happened in school not university.

Hey Owl! *super awesome hug* And yes, parents can be very overreacting. This week in the Netherlands, two primary school teachers were attacked by parents for super silly reasons.

I once had the headmistress of our school chase me down the street after school to confiscate my coat, because it wasn't the official school uniform coat...
Admittedly she was a complete bitch.

I love my smart phone for all it's other features, but dislike actual phone calls; I don't think man kind has ever invented a more awkward form of communication.

Same in the US... Teachers started getting in trouble for confiscating toys, phones, distractions, etc. ... But that behaviour can't go on, so confiscation became part of the agreement you (or your parents) must sign before taking classes.
