Yes, that was totally true. During the USSR era, Iron Curtain was a reality. In the 90-s things from abroad became more accessible but they were quite expensive. And licensed media, like movies and software, were hard to come by even then.

Yes, the iron curtain was fierce, I heard only the elites and their relatives got access to foreign media plus there was a dark market for such illegal stuff and the prices were high so were the possible consequences with the law. Some movies, many of which came from ex USSR-friendly countries (not anymore that friendly), Italy, France and India were allowed for local cinema and TV however with heavy cut from soviet censorship (naked women were forbidden). I heard stories and watched a TV program about how our militia forces (now called the police) fight the illegal watching of porn. Good times.
After the fall in 1991 we got everything, I remember watching the amazing sci-fi TV series called Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future and Ninja Turtles animation along with Duck Tales, those were the best. Sigh...

I loved the old TMNT show, Duck Tales(also like the new one as well), etc.....such fun shows and a special part of my childhood(old cartoon shows and the like).

My favorite episode of Star Trek? Far too many to count. There's TNG The Emisaary. A old bird of prey crew wakes and thinks they're still at war with the federation. Their solution? Have worf take command of the enterprise and convince them to stand down. One of the first episodes I liked. As weird as it sounds I also like neelix.. voyager encounters neelix in a debris field.. they trade him water to help them find their missing crew.. where two holodoctors take command of a ship that can split into 3.. DS9 where nog says he wants to join the federation because he wants his life to mean more then profit...
I also like the orville.. star trek feels like a idealized version of mankind's future.. whereas orville feels like a more realistic version of mankind's future. If that makes any sense.

Well, last time I watched Trek was 10+ years ago, but I still remember my favorites from TNG. Personal favorite is "All Good Things..." series finale, because it ends on bittersweet note for Picard and the viewers, while also reminding that the universe will always hold wondrous and dangerous mysteries to explore, so keeping an open mind is a must.

"The Inner Light", Patrick Stewart's favorite episode was also one which I always fondly remember. Unfortunately, every time I watch the ending, somebody is chopping up the onions near me.
I think my personal favorite is the Haunting from 1963.
