Has this game ever been or will it ever be available to buy on GOG? Enjoyed ky when I was younger and would like to see it again.

Thanks
None of the Legend games (gateway, death gate, callahan's etc) are on GOG... yet.
Even if they were here (and they damn well should be), I'm not sure what the chances are Companions of Xanth would be released. The game is based on Piers Anthony's novels so I'd figure there's an extra layer of rights that would need to be sorted out.

Except for Star Control 3...

Edit: And I think they did quite a bit of work on the Unreal games, though Epic seems to take full credit for everything nowadays...

I remember that game. It had its amusing moments, but I recall being frustrated about scenes with plenty of open areas in the picture but supposedly the whole way was blocked by *whatever* and other logic fails. Still, if it was here and cheap I would probably play it again, just for the nostalgia.

My most wanted Legend game is Eric the Unready, which was/is an all time favorite.

Agreed on Eric the Unready. Also, Superhero League of Hoboken.
When i see the word Xanth, the first thing coming to mind is Piers Anthony... And second is Xanatos... Neither are probably related :P

Actually you made the right connection. The game was based on the novels of Piers Anthony and his magical world of Xanth. Have you read the books? I liked the early ones but lost track of the series later.

Really? Wow...

Years ago as a teen i was building a library with most of his books in it :P How far did i read... It was pretty darn far. I don't think i got through his whole every-letter-in-the-alphabet he was going for, but i read 20 books or so? God that was a long time ago.

I figured the game wasn't connected to Piers Anthony simply because the word Xanth could have been pulled from thin air as the name of the badguy, rather than the demon Xanth... Along with Mars, Earth, and... Jupiter? Although there were video games of book series long long ago, but the graphical quality was rather low. I remember trying to play Dragons of Pern on the Atari, getting hopelessly lost and quitting...

edit: Glancing at the screenshots and wikipage on the game, it does look familiar, and of course Demons Don't Dream i remember that book. One of the larger plot points was one of the companions was randomly selected to betray you if you selected them, but they would only betray you at the last moment...

I was so excited for most of Piers Anthony's stuff long ago... Although it got weaker over time as he didn't try as hard after a while before putting a book out.

A friend let me know that Piers Anthony has added a few more to the series in recent years. He said it was in the 30's but I just looked it up on Wikipedia and The Xanth series is up to 40 now. Wow!

I've been toying with the idea of reading them again, then slowly working towards the new ones. I may get around to it - or not. The first 10 books were great fun, but I seem to remember they fell off a bit after Man from Mundania. I read a few beyond that, so you lasted longer than I did. lol

Yes, I believe the Companions of Xanth game was loosely based on Demons Don't Dream.

^no love for discworld ?
both games ( all 4 of them ) or the books ( all 40 of them )
Piers Anthony is one of my favorite authors, but the Xanth books just never grabbed me. I read into the 4th and just stopped. However, I've read lots and lots of his other books and like/love them a great deal. Read Firefly.
I suppose the topic becomes more about Piers Anthony products :P

I really enjoyed the Virtual Mode series, although apparently one of the books didn't sell well so he just wrapped up the series and closed it. You can tell from the writing a lot was gutted out of the book when there probably should have been another 1-2 to go with it.

Incarnations of Immortality were good... all seven of them.

Then there was the Adept Series... Also good...

Ah yes then there's Total Recall... I enjoyed the book, the movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger had some things wrong. Then they had the Movie adaptation to the book where they changed some things and i couldn't read it. I distinctly remember different sets of lines and impressions from some of the characters and they were messed up... Haven't seen the new movie, hopefully it does a better job.

Xanth series... Hmmm...

One thing i noticed as i grew older from my teens, is his style of writing is very uninspiring. He lacks a lot of details, so much it feels a more like J.K. Rowling with details explicitly missing to keep you in suspense, details had you seen (even if they were subtle) would have told you a lot more details. His level of detail is probably... i don't know... 4th grade? 5th? He doesn't go into huge amounts of detail on anything and descriptions usually are rather simple. If you like filling in the graphical details then it's a great style. Curiously he did that more in Xanth than else where, relying a lot on puns.

Plenty of other books i can't name off the top of my head... Guess i just grew out of him as a whole...

I actually love the Discworld series and games, though I only know of three Discworld games in existence, but why would you assume anything about my interest in them or lack of it from this thread? The title of this thread is "Companions of Xanth." What does Terry Pratchett's Discworld have to do with talking about the game Companions of Xanth or the Xanth series by Piers Anthony?
