Ixamyakxim: Looks / sounds pretty cool.

... Awesome that you can read books in game - anyone know it they're actual full length reproductions of the originals?
From the Presskit:
In the game you can read real, complete books, mostly classics of world literature obtained from Project Gutenberg.

Project Gutenberg offers the originals.

Ah cool so that's how they did it - makes sense. Thanks Gix.

Alexim: If the internet connection is used to interface with the site of some international organization that measures time, I think it may be acceptable

Cavalary: Not from where I'm standing. Doesn't it say right there on the side "No activation or online connection required to play."?
I would also like to know this. If this doesn’t work fully offline, it shouldn’t be on GOG. Even if it syncs with publicly available internet clocks, it should be removed if it requires any internet.

it would be enough if it could sync against a local ntp server. That should be configurable.

How would that fit the "no connection whatsoever" concept?

Because you can run that ntp yourself on the same computer, so essentially without any connection to outside.

So what's the delay?
For technical reasons the release of The Longing on GOG.com will be slightly delayed, we promise it'll be less than 400 days.
I'm another one who hopes there is no connection requirement just on principle's sake. Frankly, it would be ridiculous. To prevent a player from choosing to cheat the game they "own", the game has to phone out? That makes absolutely no sense. Base it off the system clock; if the player wants to play the way it was intended they can, if the player wants to speed through part of or most of the game they can. As someone who values player choice in games, this seems a bad design decision.

Agreed. Personally, I wouldn't be interested in spoiling the game, but let users have this option is they want to.

Developers are giving us the demo of the game on the waiting point :)

Reading the threads on Steam, apparently the game checks your internet connection at startup, connecting to google.com. There are already people who unfortunately can't play the game because the game doesn't detect a connection.

At this point I think the delay for the release on GOG is due to the removal of this check in the GOG version of the game. In any case I hope it won't take long, because the concept intrigues me a lot.

Pretty much, I posted this in the GOG forum for the game and I agree with you, it must be the reason.

https://www.gog.com/forum/the_longing/release_delay_on_gog/post2"

...

"I suspect it is to remove the requirement to be connected to the internet to start the game, which goes against GOG's DRM free policy.

..."Luckily, the game only needs to check once on startup, so no constant internet connection is required. "

https://steamcommunity.com/app/893850/discussions/0/1638668568128088208/#c3681064390585350952

If you look at the profile who posted this, it is clear that it either a developer, or someone working for the developer. This requirement breaks GOG's DRM free policy.

" Why buy on GOG.COM?
DRM FREE. No activation or online connection required to play. "
