The year is 50 B.C. Gaul is entirely occupied by the Romans. Well, not entirely…

The Gauls are back and coming soon to GOG.COM in Asterix & Obelix: Slap them All!, a brand-new 2D horizontal scrolling Beat Them Up game, completely hand-drawn and made in the purest tradition of the genre.

Andrzejef: Go to the Camp Delirium and ask for Lucius Minus. He'll take you from there.

I see everyone watched The Twelve Tasks of Asterix when they were kids.

And not just when they were kids. :D

You want to register a galley? That's done down at the port.
The art looks fantastic. Though I'm not as good with side scrolling games as I used to be. Wishlisted for sure.

Matewis: Ooh definitely my cup of tea :D However, I don't know about anyone else, but there is something ever so slightly off about Asterix and Obelix's appearance, and the other characters too to an extent. Like it's a 90% faithful replication/adpation of Uderzo's style. Perhaps it's just the lines that are too thin for my taste.
Dunno, something is just bugging me about it. Do the characters look a little lifeless to anyone else?
avatar
DarkBattler: I feel exactly the same way about it, but I don't think the characters are the only ones that are lifeless. The backgrounds too are a little bit off.
Everything is a little too "clean", too smooth. I think it is related to the fact that everything was probably drawn with a graphics drawing tablet, or something like that, and they did not manage to render a most traditional art style like the old Asterix comics had.

Anyway, I agree that those graphics seem to be 90% faithful to Uderzo's style.
Unfortunately, for me, the lacking 10% take a lot off the visual aspect of the game.

Let's hope it will be more faithful to the comics in spirit, and fun to play.
Yeah, I too believe it feels like that because it is done digitally.

Hello Matewis!

I do agree with you. Something feels really off, despite being quite close to the original artwork.

After comparing a couple of images from the comic magazines, early cartoon film adaptations and games such as "Asterix Gallic War" I got the impression, that the higher resolution and lack of color gradients are the culprits, resulting in a too clean and mobile-app-like appearance. The backgrounds are a bit better, but the used color palette does not seem authentic enough. The comics and cartoon films had more washed out colours for the environment!

If you compare the teaser trailer from "Asterix & Obelix: Slap them All!" with the low resolution cutscenes from e.g. "Asterix Gallic War", you can see the difference easily.

My biggest doubt regarding this new Beatem-up is, whether lower screen resolutions will be supported, as wel, or not!

Kind regards,
foxgog
the looks of the 3D A&O game put me off, but this one brings me back to the old arcade days! German language...interested!

Breja: Looks fantastic. Actually, it looks a lot like an arcade game that ate up a shitload of my money one summer, long ago. But I hope this is a bit more forgiving :D
Same, probably the same title. I remember once I was, after many coins, almost at the end, final battle, and the arcade's owner mother turned my machine off because she feared I wouldn't play anymore if I finished it. Of course she was not really sound of mind anymore, so I was more shocked than angery.

True, nothing like the printed comics or the old movies, it's a more "modern" digital style that's not great for me, but still better than the fakey plasticky 3D of the other A&O title here. If the game is GOOD I'm sure we can close our eyes 10%, metaphorically speaking, and enjoy it.

The colours are perhaps a little off yes, and the thinner lines/digital look certainly plays a role as well, but the more I look at it, the more I think it's just a sort of artistic uncanny valley. Uderzo was a true master, and the closer you get to trying to imitate his great style, the more your mind rejects it. I mean I think it's quite obvious that something is a little off about the art style in even the most recent Asterix books, but of course to a far lesser degree. Asterix and the Picts I'd say managed to climb most of the way up the other side of the uncanny valley. It's very well done.

If I have to try and be specific here, I think it's a combination of facial expressions (especially of the romans getting hit), postures and even hands (not too bothered by the backgrounds). Even though these are very well done, it clearly lacks some of Uderzo's magic touch.

Not to burn on the game at all. I'm definitely going to buy it, because this is exactly the kind of Asterix game I want. It just reaffirms to me how much of a master Uderzo was, and how extraordinarily difficult it is to capture his style.

foxgog: e.g. "Asterix Gallic War",
Now that you mention it. Asterix: Caesar's Challenge and Asterix, These Romans Are Crazy! also come to mind.

I can kinda see where you're coming from, but I'm still more impressed by how good it looks than put off by any imperfections. It still looks closer to the comic than maybe any game based on a comic I've ever seen. I mean, do you have any idea what I'd give for a Batman game that would look like a 90% faithful adaptation of Norm Breyfogle's style?

Not sure if I'll end up buying this or not, but this thread makes me want to read Asterix again.

Sure, which is why I'm also definitely going to buy it. I'm just too excited that a game like this is being made!

As for Batman, in my case I'd kill for a modern The Animated Series adaption. The closest I've gotten are skins from that series in Arkham City, for both Batman and Catwoman, and even just those few crumbs were awesome.
But unfortunately Norm Breyfogle will be harder to capture in a game.

Croyzers: This is either going to be absolutely amazing or absolutely crap

I'm hoping for the former, but this really has the look of a mobile phone game.

Please be good, please be good...
I know! The name isn't helping... "Slap them All!" :S

beautiful, and I prefer those graphics way more. Consolation is we should be getting a new Mutant Ninja Turtles game in the classic style.
