GamezRanker: It seems the game is coming along nicely.....tis good to see :)
(when the game is completed, I might just find some time to give it a whirl)
Thanks! Development has been going on quite well. Though releasing the demo was bigger task than I thought it would be, but now that's out of the way, I can focus on the game. At the moment I'm working on the new skill system and some other stuff related to it.

Sounds good......I wish the best of luck to ya in eventually getting it all wrapped up and completed :)
Thanks! :)

I've been re-working some enemy sprites and these might end up in the demo once finished.

I've released a balancing update for the demo and made a tutorial video to get things started.

There's going to be two more updates for the Chronicles of Vaeltaja's demo, which will bring new enemy and NPC sprites. Finally enemies and NPCs have side profiles and animations when they roam around the game world! After the second update I will announce a small competition, so three lucky ones will win a Steam key for the release version!

Though at the moment I'm focused on the Steam release of the game, I haven't abandoned my plans for GOG release. I just feel the game hasn't gotten enough attention here, while the Steam demo has been a bigger success than I thought it would be and wishlistings keep growing, so I want to build some momentum for it and re-think my marketing strategy.

I'm very happy about all the feedback and attention the game has gotten so far, and I will do my best to keep improving it!

Worth noting that mentions of a steam release and a steam demo, without putting it up on any other platform, actually makes some people here, like myself, actually less interested in the game than we'd otherwise be.

(Perhaps releasing the demo somewhere like itch.io might help? (And if you do that, please also release the full game there when it's ready.))

Fair points! Itch.io release for the demo is something that I'm planning to do soon.

I echo dtgreene's sentiment, though also glad you haven't abandoned plans for a GOG release. I would also like to see the full game be available for purchase from itch.io in DRM-free form. I know that it is possible for developers to do something like make games play without the Steam client (though my understanding is that Steam strongly encourages the client DRM), but for many of us including myself we don't want to give money to the Steam platform even if an individual game could possibly be played without the client.

If I may, and I don't mean this rudely, but GOG is a much smaller site, so it is not shocking you haven't gotten the same amount of interest here. Not everyone participates in the forum and furthermore your game doesn't have a demo here so it is literally impossible for anyone here to wishlist it as a "Coming Soon" title. The most we can do is add a vote to the Community Wishlist, of which is debatable in its usefulness, given the fact many highly desired titles show no signs of coming here while, iirc, games with single/low double-digit votes have been released here.

The Community Wishlist entry for your game is here: https://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/chronicles_of_vaeltaja_in_search_of_the_great_wanderer

I have added my vote, for what its worth :)

Thanks for your insight!
I have to admit that even though I've been a GOG customer for years, I really haven't used the forum almost at all - then again I've never been a person who actively participates in forum discussions. Anyway, the reason I've supported GOG all these years are DRM free games, and I want to release Chronicles as DRM free. That's why I've been planning GOG and Itch.io releases from the beginning. I created the Community Wishlist entry to see if there are interest for the game in here, but as I don't use these forums much or other community features, I've been kind of clueless how things are working here.

As my resources are quite limited, I've also thought it's easier to focus on one platform at the time, and Steam has been an easy choice because it's easier to reach people might be interested. But I've been thinking that once I get these final two updates finished, I will focus on releasing the demo in here and Itch.io.

Witchgrove Games: I just feel the game hasn't gotten enough attention here
If you have released demo exclusively on Steam, why do you expect much attention on other stores? ;)

It does not mean, that you should make dedicated demo for each store. To the contrary, it would be better, if you hosted DRM-free version of the demo on your personal website, or any other public ( download without registration ) resource.)

The overall GOG user-base is smaller, than of Steam. But much more GOG customers could be interested in a niche old-school product ( like this one ) in comparison to Steam.

I was talking mostly about this thread and the Community Wishlist for the game, which I both started to see if there's any interest in here for the game. I've always thought GOG would be quite natural place for this game.

But like I said earlier, it's easier to focus on one platform at a time as I have to do everything (development, marketing, communicating etc.) by myself.

Self-fulfilling prophecy, then. If you focus on one platform, people who are on that platform will show interest while others won't. And the demo just on Steam, not even on itch or a personal site, as was already suggested, so everyone will be able to get it, makes it clear that everything else is excluded. And we've been bitten plenty of times by devs who chose to focus on one platform, even after release, and abandoned the game here, so if it seems like there's a risk of that happening, it only follows that there won't be much interest, why risk it?
As for engagement, there may be orders of magnitude of difference between active posters on Steam and GOG, or anywhere else, so tailor expectations accordingly.

As others said or hinted at: the wishlist seems to be (more or less) abandoned by GOG as a way to pick games for their store, and also these forums are more or less on life support** & only about 5% or less of the total gog customer base seem to use them. As such, i'd not be disheartened by a supposed lack of response here.

(**due to poor decisions on how to run them and the company itself,
which I won't get into here as discussing such much is also against forum rules)

Do think that they do use the wishlist as a guideline. There was also that interview with those from SNEG (so basically GOG's classic game fixing and publishing arm that broke off) where those said the wishlist matters too. But way back I recall a message saying that they approach publishers of games with at least 500 votes, so 45 would be far from the radar.
Thanks for your insights, this is all very helpful!

I'm quite aware that many indie devs have given GOG a cold shoulder, and it might be for the same reasons, that made me think about this whole situation. I really thought those Community Wishlist entries would play a bigger part getting your game released at GOG. But at least now I feel a bit more enlightened about the Community Wishlist and forum activity, and I feel much more positive about the GOG release in general.

Perhaps the right choice might be releasing the demo in Itch.io and then start to pursuit the GOG release for the full game.

Oh, so I wasn't far from the truth after all.
