TLDR:

Is anyone else having issues getting anything to download from GOG for more than 10-15 minutes at a time? Or is it just me that's having issues?

Full explanation:

I'm in IN, USA. Trying to download a copy of Elminage Gothic.

If I use Chrome, the download hangs sometime along the way, usually very early, and while it's running it downloads at about a tenth of my normal downloading speeds.

Out of desperation I tried the GOG downloader app. It gets stuck with "Checksum error on chunk 0, please contact support!". Sometimes I've gotten lucky and got it to checksum 2 or 3, but it never gets past that. I should probably note that downloading the small 3.5 MB downloader itself also took 3 tries due to the same disconnecting issues as above. The downloader seems to be unable to recover from whatever it's hung up on without being shut down, closed, and restarted entirely.

For the record, everything else on the net works fine from here, I've been playing Guild Wars this afternoon and the patches for that went through at normal speed. I can browse the net just fine as well, including most of GOG, except the screenshots for games on the GOG store pages take a long time to load and sometimes get stuck unloaded.

I know the error message says to contact support, but I wanted to make sure I'm not one of a flood of people doing so. So I'm posting here instead to check if any of you might be having a similar issue today.
I've been getting some ridiculous slow download speeds with GOG lately. I wonder if that is related to the issue. Right now it's downloading slower than 20 KB/sec, and I have a broadband connection. GOG really needs to get more servers to deal with the increase in customers.

Ok, at least I know it's not just me.

The servers probably are just being hammered to death then. That means while we all say "we'll just try downloading another day", we actually mean "another day" to be 5 seconds later, right. :p

Time to find something else to do over the weekend then. ;)

It seems to be a local thing (in US?), because here I've been downloading GOG games at full speed pretty much all the time. Both with the Downloader, and without it. Last time was yesterday, I think.

I have sometimes some other generic internet issues though, but then pretty much all web sites seem to be unreachable. I am suspecting some neighbor of mine is messing up with my WLAN connection, because it usually happens during "busy hours".

Oh, and Mobygames.com seemed to be unreachable whole yesterday! Luckily, now it seems to be back online.

EDIT: I am right now downloading GOG Empire Earth Gold at 1.2 MBytes/sec (without Downloader), which is pretty much the maximum speed on my 10Mbit/s cable modem line.

EDIT2: And the same for Elminage Gothic, as it was the game the OP was trying to download. It appears to me it is usually US users who are complaining about the speeds (and sometimes Chinese users complaining they can't download at all, possibly due to the Great Firewall of China). Are you guys possibly from the same parts of US?

Unfortunately, I've been getting ridiculously slow connections from GOG for over a month now. I've already called my ISP about this and they said the connection is fine on my side. I used to be able to download from GOG at least 2-3 MB/sec. Now it's been downloading at 80 KB/sec or slower. Here is a screenshot from today http://i.imgur.com/K3mxBDl.png :-/ I've contacted Support multiple times about this, but for some reason they still haven't fixed the problem.
I can barely download at all from my library right now, while located in China (usually works fine). So, it's not just a regional thing.

Still getting errors this morning, in IN, USA.

Maybe some major part of the network between the users that are having trouble and GOG is down? I haven't heard anything on the news feeds, though I don't keep up on them much either.

If GOG is downloading fine for some people in certain countries, it seems the issue might be out of their hands to solve. I guess a good test for that would be to find another site that is located in GOG's territory and try downloading something from them. I don't know of any myself.

On the other hand, I just tried out the "test our connection to you" page, and finished both tests in about 20-30 seconds. So whatever that tests seems to have gone through no problem. My guess is that since those tests are short, the connection is stable enough to complete them.

It appears to just be the game/screenshot downloads that are getting cut off across the internet pipes. Forums work, and the main site is a bit slow but everything except the screenshots loads at a reasonable speed considering it's being pulled from across the sea. It's just the super important game downloads that are broken.

Regions not countries. GOG is high speed as it usually is for me. FYI, they use a CDN for the game downloads. I would send in a support ticket if you haven't in case GOG isn't aware of the problem in your region.
Hmm, had to look CDN up. Learn something new everyday. :)

Unfortunetly for me, it seems whatever CDN server I'm pulling from in my region is basically broken.

I've messaged support yesterday but I kinda forgot it was the weekend. Hopefully they reply sometime in the next few days. Included the exact game I was having issues downloading and some info on where I am. Weird thing is I couldn't select the exact purchase of the game, the support list only had about 14 entries on it, none of which were recent purchases. (I've got around 30+ game purchases with email receipts in my records and on my account). I hope that's just a fluke of the support page.

In the meantime I've managed to keep booting and rebooting the downloader with it set to a single source in options, as listed under the GOG support entry for download errors. I've gotten all the way to chunk 13, supposedly. Haven't been able to pull that part at all for the last day and a half. Maybe it's the definition of insanity, but hey, 180 MB is more then any other downloading method so far. :p

Do you think GOG should offer CD/DVD shipped downloads of the games (not for free of course, but maybe as a small "extra fee + shipping"), for when the servers break like this or people have a shaky connection?

I'm only half kidding about this, according to my confirmation email it's been over 9 days since I started trying to download this game after the "instant" purchase. A cd from their HQ location would have probably shown up in the mail by now, and with the promotion I already saved 5 off the full price. So spending that extra 5 to make sure a freshly written cd with the data on it got here isn't really that silly of an idea anymore. :p It would be like the old days of ordering cds too...

I also have about 13 game updates to download to keep my local collection up to date, but I'm not even going to be attempting that till this network issue is fixed, lol.

I guess the saga continues. :D Do de do dooooo, dum dum doooo, do do de doooo, do dum do, do, do!

Edit: Yes, I totally edited this just to fix my indiana jones music chant to be more readable. Yeah. Time to get back to work.

Not sure if you received are direct response yet, but Firek was looking for people with slow downloads as seen here.

Also, the edit was/is completely worthwhile.

Thanks Gydion for the link, I would have probably missed his post otherwise. Info sent vie PM to Firek. Let's hope they can fix the problem, or at least track it down. It's so frustrating, but at least they are working on the issue. :)
