It' funny to see Blizzard and HK discussed here.
It's my first post on GOG, and I`ll try to say something about China as a Chinese.

The only way HK declare independence is China loses World War III in future. It doesn`t matter with how warlike Chinese goverment is . It`s 1.4billion Chinese people‘s will.

In 1840, Opium War I broke out.
In 1841 Jan 26 , UK forcibly occupied HK.
In 1842 Aug 29, unequal treaties (The Convention of Nanjing) were made under duress, HK island was ceded to UK.
In 1860 ,Opium War II broke out. Oct 24 The Convention of Peking was made under duress, Kowloon peninsula(part of HK) was ceded to UK.
In 1898 Jun 9, UK forced Qing( Goverment at that time) to sign the HK lease agreement which last 99 years till 1997.

We suffered the ignominy of weak for hundreds of years。
No matter the goverment was Qing Dynasty or is the Communist Party, every politician and Chinese people will not allow any separatists.

“For Freedem?” HK may is the only place where legally doesn`t have treason.

70 years ago, Chinese Goverment fanatically call on Chinese peole liberate the world into Communism.
But after the Great Cultural (1966~1976) and the famine (1959~1961) we know that how ridiculous to persist in ideology fight.
The most important thing is enough food for live, better life for their people, formidable army for preventing war.

Now, 70 years later, you "west" people still believe that the world should be "free for freedem or democracy".
“I think they're dictatorship, we should liberate them from the wrong ideology and political system."
Uh oh...
The player broke a rule. He hijacked Blizzard's platform for his own agenda. The player himself said that he knew that he would get into trouble. Did Blizzard overreact? Yes they did. But like others have said there is a ton of money involved. Yes it is sad that the Chinese government is trying to control our freedoms. Look what happened to the NBA team The Houston Rockets because of what the GM had said. Also look to what happen to the creators of South Park because of an episode about China. I do agree that GOG should stay far way from anything political.

It's one thing to impose an ideology on other regions and people, and another to support a regions' desire for their own independence.

So let me speak as someone from "the west": I'm very happy to live in a country whose people managed to gain independence from Russian and Swedish rule (both very lovely countries), and dictatorship vs freedom vs democracy has nothing at all to do with it.
Just checked the Blizzard reddit and damn... They might have an unrecoverable PR disaster on their hands....

The first page is nothing but reactions to this.

tremere110: Technically, the player broke a rule by making a political statement. Taking away his hard earned prize money and banning him and the announcers as well was way overkill though. Seriously, when all they did was take down the stream most people just shrugged.

But this? Too far Blizzard, too far...

DadJoke007: Political statements have been made in tournaments before, no consequences. China gets special treatment as it seems.
Yup, add lack of consistency to the list of Blizzard's sins. I suspect profit is a large motivating factor in this.
There's no reason for GOG to take a stand on this issue. It doesn't pertain to them.

With that said...

... Chinese money -- especially in the last decade -- has invested-in and subsidized many industries -- including many game, film, sports, and entertainment companies (in the US). We are only starting to feel the influence of that money... and it's far more problematic than THQ substituting North Koreans for Chinese in Homefront.

As for Blizzard, the NBA, and others...

Often corporations hold no beliefs or convictions. When recently Google removed "Do no evil" from its company policy, it would seem to be clear that modern corporations can't even keep true to simple mantras. They will always turn toward the money... even if that's away from rights. And when corporations see billions of new potential consumers, expect them to side with the government of those billions.
I miss old Blizzard :(

I still want to buy Starcraft 2's expansions at some point but now I'm not so sure

Yeah, both KotakuInAction(Gamergate) and Gamerghazi(Anti-Gamergate) both agree on this. You know you've fucked up when that happens.

The Chinese government whoring out it's labor force to the elitist scum that waged the opium war has *not* resulted in a higher standard of life for all Chinese people -- it's resulted in the rise of Chinese billionaires.

Both East *and* West are philosophically bankrupt. Our only hope lies in refusing to accept the rule of those who have cast aside their humanity and care only for wealth and power, and our time is fast running out.

Nothing inappropriate with you and your country even your ideology , if you west people do not support the HK independence only becaucse those people enounced the word "freedom" or "democracy". Meanwhile west media report little about the terrorist attacks in HK which now torment ordinary people.

You have the right to say anything, but please know more the things that started this chaos before you say "I stand for freedom" to HK.
However, it's your fundamental human right to say anything, even you declare your political point with your eyes closed.

Everyone or every company, you and Blizzard, has the right to declare their points. Just be responsible for what you say and prepare for the worst.

The gap between the wealthy and poor is a worldwide and historic problem to all countries.
Our goverment has been finding a way to sovle it for decades.
Before 1978, Chinese goverment even did some policy which extremely wrong.
There was not an available way.
Welcome if you have a chance to come China, see the real China besides Shanghai, HK or Beijing, which has the same poblem and vigor compared with others.
It's not fake booming apart from some metropolis. We people and goverment always tried to make our homeland better.
However the Communist Party really did wrong policy and do has corruption now, we will never want to go separation.

It might behoove you to watch more in-depth coverage across multiple outlets on the protests and situation. Oh wait... you're in China.

Some of us know more about this situation than you think.

Back OT...

I think it's interesting that Tencent.-- which owns 5% of Blizaard -- seemingly owns 48% of Epic. If 5% and a gateway to China (companies must have partial Chinese ownership in order to enter Chinese market) is enough to bring this kind of censorship, what does 48% bring?

GWENT: Thronebreaker must be so boring, otherwise I would play it all night.
What did I say does nothing between countries and the misunderstanding.
So PLAY the game , before I can login GOG and buy games to support CD Projekt RED in China.
If GOG.com do some statement, i may say goodbye to genuine game.

It's not a perfect country, but it's my country. It's our homeland.
