Welcome, Russian-speaking gamers!

GOG.com has always been about bringing you the widest selection of the greatest games: classic, new, all DRM-free. To keep this up we need to grow, and to grow we want to reach out to more gamers worldwide. We've already unveiled a French and German version of our store, and today we're introducing Russian to GOG.com! (Did you know that it's the second most used language on the internet?)

We already have more than 150 games in Russian in our catalog, and today we celebrate by releasing six new DRM-free games - including two digital distribution exclusives and three weeklong discounts:
-<span class="bold">Galactic Assault: Prisoner of Power</span> (digital distribution exclusive)
-<span class="bold">Sea Dogs</span> (digital distribution exclusive)
-<span class="bold">Wings of Prey Complete</span>
-<span class="bold">Pilot Brothers</span> (-33%)
-<span class="bold">Men of War</span> (-50%)
-<span class="bold">Death to Spies</span> (-50%)

We have over 30 more games on sale this weekend up to 75% off: Russian-language games straight "<span class="bold">From Russian with Love</span>"! That includes not just the new releases, but also the King's Bounty saga, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series and more. Everyone is invited to mingle, and it's as good a time as any to break down gaming's largest language barriers one discount at a time.

With an all-new website language, localised customer support, and a dedicated Russian forum, we're hoping to become the right place for all of our Russian-speaking gamers. We’re also adjusting our prices in those regions. For over a year we’ve been offering games at lower prices in Russia and other independent countries that emerged from the USSR, places where game prices have historically been lower than in western markets. Starting today, more games will be priced appropriately for these territories. We've decided to adjust our pricing to the realities of the market, to avoid a sense that you have to pay more to get your games DRM-free or that GOG.com games are more expensive than other stores that operate in those regions.

Just in case you wondering, introducing these price changes won't affect the way gifting works today on GOG.com.

vegomoonlit: "From Russia with love" 35+ russian games: STALKER, Cossacks...
For me you can just call us all russians here in Ukraine. We would love it. Good job, GOG.
avatar
sillygrapist: "From Russian". It's only about the language not your freaking nationality, calm down.
I speak about people who created this games. GSC Game World. Ukrainian team.
Not about nationality but country freaking russian.

vicklemos: Something I always ask myself is why Russia is so Windows friendly and we barely saw mac games thru the 90s and the following decade.
Why is that? Overspread windows piracy/bundled pcs with windows preinstalled/high mac prices?
And Linux? The only oldschool russian game that had linux support back in the day-or the only one I can think of now- is Vangers....
avatar
JudasIscariot: Macs are somewhat expensive here in Poland so I can only imagine how expensive they may be in Russia or the CIS territories.

Also, Windows PCs are easier to put together so if you are on a budget it's easier to get a running PC with a little bit of know-how and older parts whereas Macs were always closed off systems.
true..... plus in the old days when we had amiga's in europe, they were quite expensive aswell compared to a pc, plus the fact there was little to almost no business software or games available.
I saw loads of games on PC back then, and i am a person that likes to have tons of nice games instead of 5 excellent games, so lateron i turned to the PC.

Well, GOG is obviously referring to Russian language and this case isn't really a stretch considering AFAIK Russian is the only language all the STALKER localization work for which was done by GSC themselves and not outsourced. Also, some of the non-conversation speech is in Russian in other localizations, including Ukrainian and English versions.
Your first post majorly distorts the actual GOG's words in announcement which mention Russia only closer to the end and don't contain anything about Russian nationality at all. Thus there's no reason to get upset and/or enkindle a Holy War on political grounds here (there is a dedicated thread for that if you really want to).
Finally, it's not like your gaming community doesn't profit from regional pricing that came with this event too. So please, just chill out and enjoy.

gamesfreak64: I estimate thats 20 maybe 30procent in the netherlands are still loaded with cash, the rest is getting around , and many more people are getting into trouble to provide for themselves ( 50procent at least I think), and dont take all the stuff they tell you for serious cause politicians tend to exaggerate a lot ....

The Netherlands is no longer an Utopia like most people think it still is, those golden days are long gone for many many years, the biggest bad stuff occured from 2000 until now.
avatar
Starmaker: There's still the Gini index data. The Netherlands' is 30.9, Russia's is 41.7. So while the average income in Russia is seven times lower than in the Netherlands, the average Russian is even more worse off than the average Dutch. And don't even get me started on Ukraine -- they don't have the oil pipe to suck off so their Gini is low (28.2), but they are twenty times poorer.
That is also easy to explain:

most western european countries have differnt 'care' systems, before obama the US had no things like that, the rich were loaded the others were very very poor, and had to live on food stamps.

maybe there might be some people in the netherlands that are also living like that, but generally its not that bad (yet, but if they continue to mess up (our govs) it might be possible).

Another fact is that certain governments, would like to keep the things as they were in the past, the rich , rich and the poor, poor.
So the only ones to blame for that are the guys that have the power in that country, usually they also have a no freedom of speech, and if they do it is very very limited.

In europe we can generally walk on the street and call our leaders fools and idiots, we might get a
"sstttt keep silent"
because were making a noise, but we wont be tucked away for ever and never see the lights of day.
We can photoshop images of our esteemed leaders put it on line and make funny without any problem of getting sued.

So from that point of view, its a good life a very good life in holland :D
But were are not that wealthy anymore, plus in the pas we were innovating, we were small but we were noticed and everyone knew who we were.

Okay were still doing great stuff for such a small country: building dikes, seems we are very good at it,
if you google Dikes of the Netherlands - HowStuffWorks
you see we are quite smart for such a small country, cause we are almost living on water.

So every country has something its good at.
Let me understand, you release your site in Russian, but not in Italian?
What will be the next language the Aztec?
Then you release your site in the Martian?

As long as it was in English only I could also understand, but now you have a duty to release the site in Italian.
All these different lingos give a twentieth century feel to the site.

Don't look back GOG, don't look back...

Don't be surprised if Spanish and Portuguese come first. Those two cover a whole continent ;)

Yeah, yeah, just find some more excuses to call this games russian and be proud of that. Whatever.
Its not like Im raging here and fluding this topic with my capsed messages, so stop telling me what to do and how to react. I would be very grateful. Ok?
So... is there a way to change my site to English?

I'm ok with implementing various languages, but I really do not need it and I don't need all the links to direct me to the German subforum.

I know, but this thing still makes me angry.
I love my language and I'm proud of my origins. The creators of the witcher have already wronged removing the Italian spoken in the 2 and 3 of the witcher ...
Now, if they do not add on the Italian gog just make me more angry.
This discrimination does not please me at all, if they continue like this I will change the place where I buy my games.

Robette: So... is there a way to change my site to English?
Yes : on the main page/, in the lower right, you can change your language and/or your currency, depending on which one you prefer :)

IAmSinistar: In this context a "mark" is like a marking on a ruler or a gauge. Thus a "high mark" means a superlative, like a "high measure". You give it high marks, which means you give it a high rating.
avatar
HunchBluntley: Actually, I believe "marks" in this case refers to a teacher's grade marked on a school paper (compare this similar phrase); but, yes, basically "high rating" or "high ranking" is the meaning. =)
Okay ! Thanks for the more precisions :)

I wonder this particular "discussion" would arise if GOG would have left the idea of different languages alone.
A lot of effort involved as well; is it really worth it?

Politics aside; as other posters have noted: why not ALL languages?

GOG is creating a schism; a division amongst its gamers, its community. I fail to grasp why.

Don't erect barriers. Pull them down!

Edit: capital. Corrected schism.

Not catering to your particular language is not discrimination ...
