TheSaint54: * Soldiers At War (old SSI game - I am not aware of a digital version but you can find the cdrom on Amazon and the like) Only DRM is a cd-check
Hah, it's pretty rare nowadays to find anybody who actually ever had their hands on Soldiers at War. In between X-COM and JA series, it never caught my attention in the way it probably deserved.

I'm also adding "Steel Panthers" to my "must-play" list. Can't believe I forgot one of the games that keeps getting reinstalled on every computer I own since it came out (the original version - for all the improvements both the forks received from respective studios, I still stick with the original for some reason XD)...

As an aside, for a company that went belly-up, SSI sure did release a lot of great games. QQ and all that.

I still have my boxed Soldiers at War. Last year i even installed it to see how it runs on more modern systems, it seems to run okay on the 32 bit Windows i installed to- only problem being the map scrolling speed seems to be tied to processor speed and scrolls too fast. So i suppose it could use a slow down app.
I didn't rate it quite up there with the JA games, but it was still a great game and simulated the lethal nature of modern weapons better than almost any game- your troops could easily get killed by a rifleman all the way across the map if you stood out in the open, and that's accurate. You had to use overwatch tactics to move down streets, leapfrogging your soldiers one at a time taking turns running between cover spots and keeping watch for the enemy showing itself. I wonder if GOG got the rights, or could them, to this one when they picked up their other SSI titles.

And yes Steel Panthers is a classic and one of the closest attempts to something like the board game Squad Leader series for PC. SSI and SirTech for me were the clear leaders in 90's publishers.

I am playing the CD-Rom version right now on Windows 10 64 bit. As you stated the scroll speed to way too fast, however; I manage that by using the keyboard to move the camera around. I have heard of the slow down apps but have never tried one.

It is tough to find people who know of this game these days - great game. It wasn't long ago, although it took some google digging, I found a site still hosting Soldiers At War custom maps and downloaded many. I have played several now and found they were pretty well made. I wish I would have bookmarked the link so that I could share it here.
