jepsen1977: Age of Mythology is my favourite RTS. Great combo of fairly "realistic" units but also fantasy units and superpowers that can only be used a limited amount per match.

Runner ups: Battle for Middle-Earth 1, Starcraft 2, CnC 3.
When is the last time you played C&C 3? I can't get the damn thing to install and play anymore.

Tarm: Dude you're not being a bastard. The Kohan games ARE the best RTS games ever only rivaled by Sins of a Solar Empire. For me at least. :)

I agree on Rise of Legends. A very undervalued game that unjustifiable got crap because it wasn't what the Rise of Nations die hard fans wanted. It's a great game in its own right.

Also, if you can find them somewhere, the Myth games ... so much ...
Myth you say. Never got around to try them. Seems I have to rectify that. :)

Granted it's been a few years but I seem to recall it worked well on Win 7 64. But I have read posts from people saying it didn't work right. They say you should turn off UAC but I never did that and others talk about a folder with too long of a name and needs to be renamed. Also do remember to patch the game to latest patch.
I keep forgetting stuff don't I? :I'll offer some more rather unconventional RTS pics I happen to like

Jane's fleet Command/Harpoon is a modern naval warfare simmy game thing, and it can be very slow at times, but when missiles start flying and unidentified air/submarine contacts start popping up, you'll be slowing down time anyway ...

Distant worlds (through matrix games, expensive as hell, but it does not require steam perse) is another 4x rts, but I don't think this would be what you are looking for. it really is a 4X (big print) rts (small print)

supreme ruler is sort of like a geopolitical simulator in real time, with sort-of RTS warfare. You could consider it as a kind of rts that's not as much focused on warfare alone, next to teching up, economy management (mostly), trading, diplomacy, etc ... I do duly recommend it, but the UI is a bit hard and the game is not all that transparent at times. It makes for a great show though, if this is up your alley. Imagine ruling a country and most of its aspects in an RTS setting for such. And you get to invade the USA and nuke miami while playing with Belgian Communist Europe in 1965, while Russia is under mixed New Zealand/Finnish dominion :D

Unfortunately, the "ultimate edition" is the best way to go, and so far it's only available on steam...

From the depths is a weird one and really good: It's voxel based, and you construct all your own vehicles and ships/aircraft meticulously to take over a big campaign map while harvesting resources and combatting enemy fleets in tactical battles. And it feels really good... It's still early acces and steam only far as I know though ... bit of a turnoff that.

Star wars:empire at war is cool too. It has 2D space warfare, sort-off eco and planet management and ground battles too. And masses of massive mods. It's here on gog, and both the battles and galactic campaign map are real time. A fun game, truly.
Rise and Fall : Civilizations at War isn't the best by a long shot, but I've always been curious about it. Has anyone here ever played it? Is it any good?
Tough one, one of my favorite genres...here are a few I consider among the best:

Rise of Nations + Thrones and Patriots
Age of Empires 2: The Conquerors
Age of Mythology
Stronghold Crusader
The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth as well as its expansion The Rise of the Witch King

I've been playing a lot of the Total Annihilation series lately, perhaps I shall add those to the list soon. I've also been playing some of the Earth Games with 2140 so far being my favorite. Also been playing some Starcraft, not quite played enough to really have an opinion on that one though.

I have actually played the demo of that game. While there were cool ideas, I found the game itself to be mediocre at best. Not really a bad game, but not really that great either. Part of problem could've been it was incomplete by the time it was released (considering Stainless Studios disappeared at this point).

Cool thanks. Based on some of the game's review scores I was a bit worried that it is as you say, a mediocre strategy title :P

A couple weeks ago. Windows 10 64-Bit.

Vnlr: Come to think of it, and since people are recommending Sins of a solar empire left and right, you might also want to try out the Star Ruler games. 2 is here on GOG and is magnificent. You can find boxed copies of star ruler 1, but I don't know wether they come with mandatory steam or without (I have the regular steam version from my pre-gog days).

They are fantastic games. 1 somehow reminded me a bit of Supreme commander in space, rather than a fully fledged 4x rts, but star ruler 2 is quite another beastie in that regard. I believe there are demo's for both :)

Star ruler one

and star ruler 2

(rather long videos, just skip through them a bit)

While I think that sins of a solar empire is a good game, it just never managed to captivate me somehow ... but it's well worth a try.

I was about to mention the Myth series, Soulbringer being my favorite. However; I digress as they are not on GOG at this time. If you can find the Myth series and get it to run correctly they are pure joy with some frustration mixed in o_____O.
