Shutter Island is the only one I liked, I don't really care about which one is the "best" movie but Shutter Island entertained me most. Great suspense and atmosphere. I think it's an underrated movie and some of the other movies are rather overrated. Maybe they're better in a "film school hipster appreciation way" but I don't find them entertaining.

Elmofongo: OK this time I saw the movie.

Alot shorter than Departed.

And less of that "Martin Scorsese" style of the Departed. There is humor but lets say the movie takes itself alot more seriously. The characters even the criminals act more like real people.

And even the differences is that Lau (this version of Matt Damon's character) willfully betrays Hon.

Oh and the ending can be open up the various interpretations he visits Yan's his funeral months later and still being a cop. Is there some kind of remdemption of him? He became a law abiding cop as the months passed?

XYCat: He wanted to get clean but there was no way but to kill everyone who knew about him. So in the end he became "clean" but he's shown to be carrying that guilt still. However if you really want to know how the story went after that then you should watch the other two movies. Infernal affairs 2 is a prequel with young Yan and Lau and it's more centered on the cop chief and the mob chief who really were friends once as is suggested in the first movie. It also brings up more interesting stuff about all of the characters. And Infernal Affairs 3 is a direct sequel to the first movie with Lau facing what he did and how he tries to make up for it.
A lot of people say that while both of the movies are really good, they're not as good as the first one, but for me it's a full three part story with each part being as important as the other two and I really liked how the story ended in the third film.
Would you recommend me these sequals? Because preferably I like the ending as it is.

Personally I didn't think the two other movies are as good, the third one is kind of boring to be honest, which is one of the reasons I can understand Scorsese's choice to tie up all the loose ends in a single movie.

The main difference between Shutter Island and all the other Scorsese movies I've seen is that Shutter Island was the only one that I wanted to see multiple times to catch details I missed the first time around. Thankfully, I won the movie on DVD from a radio station where they gifted it to the first person who called in. I never heard about the movie before and had no expectations whatsoever so I watched the movie in a "brain turned off" relaxed mode with tons of popcorn on my lap. That way, I didn't see the Gemini Rue style plot twist coming at all and got more enjoyment out if it. The movie is full of details that make repeated viewings very interesting and rewarding. None of the other Scorsese movies made me want to view them again, I especially disliked Taxi Driver but that's primarily due to Robert de Niro whom I don't like in any movie so I can't blame the director all too much. No idea why film buffs like that movie so much, I almost didn't finish it because it was so boring in my eyes. Tastes are different: Taxi Driver is generally considered a unique movie whereas Shutter Island is considered to be "just" a very solid thriller. Imho, very solid is often better than so called masterpieces. I didn't see what was so brilliant about de Niro's performance of the crazy main character. Sometimes, I feel like people have an obsession with crazy acting. I think crazy acting is way easier then playing a not so crazy person, and being able to play different kinds of not crazy people is the hardest. Robert de Niro and George Clooney etc are incapable of doing that. Gary Oldman on the other hand is like a chameleon, sometimes I don't even notice it's him! When he plays a crazy role I always recognize him as his crazy roles are all kinda the same (in terms of acting) but his non-crazy roles have a most impressive range. Overall, I'm much more impressed by Oldman's non-crazy roles than with his crazy roles, and more impressed with his crazy roles than with de Niro & Co's crazy roles.
