Fear of the dark has accompanied humanity from the dawn of time. Creatures like vampires were born from such fears. It also comes from a fascination with immortality and the precious life energy that is represented by blood.

🧛  Best Games about Werewolves and Vampires  🧛

The origin of a myth
Some historians argue that vampire stories originated in China and traveled to Europe via the Ottoman Empire, but as it is with many legends, it’s hard to trace the exact origins. Even the looks and powers of these creatures differ in folk tales from many parts of the world. Yet, they share one common element – vampires drink human blood to survive. They drain their victim’s life-giving body fluid using their sharp fangs and then either kill them or turn them into vampires.

They usually hunt at night since sunlight weakens their powers or can even kill them. In some legends, vampires can morph into animals like a bat or a wolf. Vampires also have superhuman strength and can often hypnotize their victims.

Luckily, they are ways to spot such individuals early. For example, vampires can’t see their image in a mirror, and they cast no shadows. Moreover, during the day, they sleep in their coffins. In this state, they become easy prey for people armed with wooden stakes and holy water. Impaling a vampire through the heart with such a stake was usually considered the best way to dispose of them.

Pop cultural references
The vampire legend was immortalized (pun intended) by the novel from Irish writer Bram Stoker, titled Dracula. Its main character, a Count cursed by vampirism, was named after Vlad Dracul, also known as Vlad the Impaler, who ruled Walachia (modern-day Romania) in the 15th century. He earned his nickname because his favorite way to kill his enemies was to impale them on a wooden stake. The novel inspired dozens of adaptations, with the most notable being Dracula featuring Bela Lugosi, and Bram Stoker's Dracula with Gary Oldman in the main role.

The Lost Boys film by Joel Schumacher in 1987 started a trend to “modernize” vampiric characters, giving them somewhat “cool” and “rebel” traits. Near Dark and Interview with the Vampire (based on the book by Anne Rice) are other examples that are perfect examples of such an approach. Also, the tabletop RPG Vampire: The Masquerade has proven to be an endless inspiration for video game developers and even spawned a short-lived TV series.

Games to play if you’re a fan of vampires
Here are some titles that will make you want to awaken your dark side:

🧛  Vampire: The Masquerade - Shadows of New York  🧛

A visual novel set in the rich universe of Vampire: The Masquerade. It's a continuation of our previous title, Coteries of New York. While Coteries was a general introduction to the world depicted in the 5th Edition of the hit tabletop role-playing game, Shadows presents a more personal and unique tale.

🧛  Vampyr  🧛

An action RPG set in London, 1918. You are newly-turned Vampyr Dr. Jonathan Reid. As a doctor, you must find a cure to save the city’s flu-ravaged citizens. As a Vampyr, you are cursed to feed on those you vowed to heal. Will you embrace the monster within?

🧛  Dracula Origin  🧛

A point-and-click adventure game that reveals the dark origins of the Dracula curse. Once the ardent defender of Christendom, Dracula loses his faith in God when he is abandoned by his one true love after she marries. Dracula then makes a pact with the Prince of Darkness and becomes a vampire.

Bloodlines is an obvious choice and that's probably why it wasn't included. ;) But Blood Omen certainly deserves a place on the list.
VtMB. Like, come on, guys, are you kidding?

Swedrami: Got it when it was re-released and have yet to play it myself but A Vampyre Story seems like quite the different, less serious approach (like The Adventures of Shuggy or The Count Lucanor) to the myth?

Nosferatu: Wrath of Malachi looks like another title (rated 4/5) one should probably check out if you're into vampires.
I would have gotten aVS if they bothered to include the German audio...might get it for extremely cheap and patch it one day. the Count Lucanor is a funny little game! I'm not a big fan of horror, I had already voted for Nocturne and will have to check on the others!
Also I checked Vampire Hunter D and Countdown Vampires from my poor old memory and they were PS exclusive, and we have never had a PS title on GOG yet, and hoping for DRM-free from Japanese companies is a bit of a random wishful thinking.
Bandai: Little Nightmares? Yes! Any Dark Souls? Of course not! Little Nightmares 2? Why, yes, of course! Why not I say!

Unrelated to Amiga and console versions the DOS version of BS's Dracula was a FPS from 1995. It had 5 manual saves slots according to the manual, and i voted for it!

Hello, my name is Miss Lilian Rossy, I'm from USA. I want to inform you all that there is a spell caster that is genuine and real. I never really believed in any of these things but when I was losing Garvin, I needed help and somewhere to turn badly. I found consultant.Dr Mudi spell Home and i ordered a LOVE SPELL. Several days later, my phone rang. Garvin was his old self again and wanted to come back to me! Not only come back, the spell caster opened him up to how much I loved and needed him. Spell Casting isn't brainwashing, but they opened his eyes to how much we have to share together. I recommend anyone who is in my old situation to try it. It will bring you a wonderful surprises as well as your lover back to you. The way things were meant to be." you can contact the spell caster on WhatsApp: +2349052617210

Well, they're either (euro)jank or dated (or both) so an acquired taste is most definitely required to appreciate them.
Also just noticed that DARK (2013) is yet another game featuring the soothing tones of Ger... Doug Cockle.

Another one in the catalogue that's worth mentioning would be Immortal Realms: Vampire Wars.

If you're up for some cheesy and campy 70s vampire goodness - the full version of Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter is available on Hammer's official Youtube channel.

Chasmancer: Aside from Bloodrayne, Castlevania and Legacy of Kain that I'm sure you are aware of, Vampires Dawn series is decent and GOG-appropriate, and you can play as a vampiress with all that entails in Sacred. One of selectable protagonists of King's Bounty: the Dark Side is also a vampire. But face it, Shadows of New York is rubbish compared to Redemption and Bloodlines.
As if this wasn't anything more than trying to market things that aren't selling well.

I'm absolutely sure that's why.

Vampire's Falls: Origin has that classic Kain looks and the writing has some weird humour. I played it on Android for free for a while but I don't like touch controls for an RPG.
For me, it's for sure Legacy of Kain on PS1. There was something different and special in this game. I've played it a lot and to be honest, you remind me of a great game, which I probably replay :D
Yeah. It could be a great if terribly complex game. I'm not a huge fan of punishing players by making the game harder when you're already struggling. I like Dark Souls because it doesn't really punish you much. You lose your money and humanity (and kindled status) but nothing else, really. DS2 and 3, as well as DeS all punish you by making the world tougher if you die. I'm not saying it should get easier if you keep dying, but I don't feel like it should get harder. Perhaps some randomization to the sleeves. You might get lucky and that one you just got was a drunken brawler, able to match up a little with your combat abilities. Or perhaps a street thief that got caught.

Hey GOG,
Are you taking note tagging the store catalog accordingly? Added value!
