Starting today, GOG Patrons can cast votes to determine which genre should be favored in the GOG Preservation Program – join them, and decide what we save next!

If you're a GOG Patron, your votes will help us shape our priorities, evaluate the urgency of our Preservation Program across a diverse range of genres, and possibly create future lists of titles to vote on during the next Patrons Voting.

This time around, you get to choose between classic CRPGs, immersive sims, real-time strategy, classic adventure games, or old-school shooters.

Cast your stars and help preserve gaming history!

00063: Yes they are idiots, they have no idea what they are really doing by supporting this!

This whole mess started with optional tips at checkout that lead to an optional subscription model. GoG is testing the waters to see how many suckers are comfortable with subscription model...
They say it's optional (for now) and they say they won't lock game access behind paywall (for now), but i think once they get enough "patrons" 10 000, 20 000, 50 000... they gona go to phase 2.
Lock features behind subscription, like:
1. Free tier - galaxy only access, ADs and slow download speed
2. GalaxyPro tier - galaxy only access but no ADs and faster download speed
3. Platinum access tier (somthing, somthing 50-100$/€ month subscription), GalaxyPro + access to offline installers
or some BS like this, they are probably considering about it right now.

And we will have patrons to thank for this! This program needs to be killed while there's still time!
100% agree, game presevation isnt about who forks over the most cash in a subscription or as GOG states "Most commited users", even tho some spend more then the sub fee montly buying games, but they arent "commited" users apperently.

Its about the love and passion for old games, not deviding the community in 2 with some bs that feels like some cheap knock off a Fallout 1st scheme.

I'm supporting GOG not doing it for any special perks. No way that GOG would start selling us games and charging a subscription to have access to our games with offline installers calling us idiots because we want to help preserve games is very low. you are taking the program wrong its a donation system to help gather more funds for games, games like from EA cost a lot to reach DRM free on GOG + GOG pays a % for every title to be on GOG and sold. its not free to have DRM free games with the acquired licenses

well, this is a bad direction to take the "preservation program" in.

[i'm not willing to call it preservation when you're selling the games in question. preservation means something entirely different.]

this seems like you're willfully driving buyers away.

eg: let's say the votes pan out for shooters. that's less money you're going to get from me, because i'm 100% not interested in shooters. whether they're historically important or not. they just do nothing for me.

i'd much rather - if you're going to "preserve" games - that you preserve /actually important/ [and interesting] games that come from ANY genre.

---

somewhat dimly related, i suppose. it's frustrating that you caved and are selling hatred now. that's work you could have put into any more meaningful game at all.

you have SUCH limited resources, and that you chose to spend those in such a manner diminishes my already diminished opinion of you.

i have no idea what's going on with mind's eye. [i don't keep a lot of tabs on all of the industry, because i'm mostly more interested in older games and indie games that are tinged in a retro direction at this point], but what little i see here in this thread doesn't fill me with hope.

as an added bonus here: the timing for hatred is especially ridiculous, since it's pride month, etc.

so, you're basically going out of your way to say, "we support this one dire thing over this other good thing." well done, i guess.

---

i'm so tired.
i just want this part of world history to be over with so we can move back in a direction where we're kinder to each other.

---

[edited in a little while later]:

suffice it to say, i am NEVER signing up for the preservation program. i was wary when it launched initially, and now i'm just out entirely.

to be a little more clear: there was a world where i could have been persuaded to join the program. but this particular direction [that's so narrow and focuses on genre uber alles] is one step [along a pathway that i assume we can't see yet] that definitely sets the program in a direction that it probably shouldn't go.

*heavy sigh*

This again...?

Really...?

Where's the logic in making people pay to vote on the next thing you're going to make them pay to buy?

What difference if I pay the monthly 5 EU (or whatever) patronage vs. buying an equivalent amount of games resulting in the same end profit? Doesn't make sense...
@GoG - how about "voting(or whatever) credits" based on purchases to solve the equality equation?

I’ll consider becoming a patron when Devotion, Fur Squadron and Welcome To Doll Town among many other legitimate games denied a place here are available for purchase, and when communication improves. Why did we only ever get four PlayStation games? When are we getting more Senran Kagura? What happened to publishers like Activision, EA, even Atari getting cold feet here—we used to be able to expect a bone here and there, but still no Crash or Spyro, or even classic EA games, no Yars Rising and probably not the upcoming Godzilla remaster—why? Is SEGA totally dead in the water after shadowdropping seven Yakuza games way back? Why? Has there been any effort to get any of these companies back on board, if even a little? I’m happy Square Enix is showing Good Old Games some love, but even then, no Kingdom Hearts, Valkyrie Elysium, FFXV, Star Ocean, Just Cause 3&4 or even Balan Wonderworld (yes, I simp). And Koei Tecmo still dragging their feet, only letting the third-party developed/published Ninja Gaiden Ragebound here, assuming they had a say on it. And Microsoft, not even single-player older games like OG Fable, RareReplay, KI Reboot or ReCore? Bandai Namco also dragging their feet when Code Vein, Namco Museum, the Tales Of games and Pac-Man remasters could sell bucketloads? The community deserves direct communication where possible—leaving us to speculate while constantly advertising a need for funds isn’t ideal or healthy for either side of the business relationship.

The difference is that the latter supports the publishers, who publish here DRM-FREE, making it far better for everyone involved than only supporting GOG alone.
GOG is nothing without the publishers.

That being said, I have seen many patrons with very small libraries, so I assume the program was really launched to extract the money from those who spend very little, because they want "clean libraries" or whatever.

Atari (nu-Atari :P) has been decent to us actually recently. The others probably stop caring about the comparably little bit of money made here (might have just been testing the waters) - maybe they went through management changes that caused this - or they want to focus on their own stores and are only on Steam out of necessity.

We probably only have Square Enix because of their financial problems and GOG probably paid nicely up front. (Maybe Ubisoft will get desperate because of their own financial problems, but I doubt it given that they don't want people owning their games. :P)

'genre favoured' that question alone is utterly garbage, I am not even starting on the wider implications of that.

I would be patron but i don't think it works for me...Gog is not what it used to be and theres many gems or ips i wish are available on gog.. but people prefer things that are wide-audience and popular like final fantasy... everyday for years i check out gog praying one of the abandonware i like is here, but it's not...

I can't be the only person who's noticed GOG's recent vote through their Patron poll for "preservation" was Thief which Nightdive announced soon after as remastering? What's the point of a Patron poll when the results are what Nightdive are remastering already!

Putting aside the fact the poll is pointless since GOG's mission statement is to preserve all the games for future compatibility what is the point of asking people to pay for a Patron for a poll if the results are predetermined already??? Do you know how dodgy that looks?

If abandonware was easy to re-license, it wouldn't be abandonware.

Also many people come to GOG for DRM-FREE games, not necessarily old/obscure games.

There are tons of mods for the original Thief that will obviously not work with NightDive's remaster. So the original is not obsolete yet.

I highly recommend The Black Parade.

That's beside the point. The poll was fixed so GOG could get attention from Nightdive announcing their Thief remaster. People are paying money for a Patron where the poll results don't matter and that's not taking into account the poll is ultimately pointless as well since GOG's mission statement is to preserve all these games.
