Hey everyone,

As already hinted on the forum, we've updated our forum rules - see the updated version here: https://support.gog.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001814049-Forum-Code-of-Conduct.

Please take the time to read the rules and familiarize yourselves with them before posting on the forum. For the majority of you, I believe nothing will change in terms of what and how you post, however, I'm very much hoping to see a positive change in the overall environment of the forum. Some of you might have to be a bit harder on themselves to get used to the new Code of Conduct, but I'm sure you can all do it!

Also note that, while I welcome constructive feedback, the rules are currently not subject to change. I'd like to give it a couple months to see if/how they work, before considering any major changes and updates.

Thanks everyone for your co-operation!

EDIT: Just to clarify as it's come up a few times - support tickets are not to be used as reports. If you wish to alert me to something you suspect breaks forum rules (this excludes past offences), do so via PMs to me directly.

EDIT2: If you have any questions, before asking me directly, please read through this thread: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/rules_threads_all_that_jazz.

mm324: Under "HOW WE MODERATE:",

However, constructive criticism and suggestions are welcome, provided they are directed to forum moderators and not disputed within the forum itself.

Does that mean we are not allowed to criticize Mod actions publicly?
Yes, pretty much. However, it goes mostly to the particular moderating actions and decisions. For example, if you are banned and find it unfair, get in touch with the moderator. Don't wait until your ability to post is re-activate and start a thread complaining about the fact that you've been banned.

timmy010: I'm generally in favour of moderation but this is too strict. I'm already breaking rules by having a backup account!
1) I'm not sure how long you've been around but it's generally agreed upon that strict might just be what this forum needs... Besides, it's really not any stricter than most forum rules all-round - perhaps just more explicit, which is what's been asked by the community.

2) I wouldn't consider having one back-up account as having multiple accounts. This mostly applies to alt accounts and spam accounts.

Djaron: Define "appropriate" ? same word can be appropriate or not, going from one country/culture to another. What is the common universal baseground ?
avatar
JMich: There are 5 general forums here, with different languages for each one. My understanding is to use the appropriate language for the forum you're writing on.
But I'm probably mistaken.
You're right.
avatar
timmy010: Ah thanks for clarification. I just hope some leniency is shown for honest mistake such as can't be bothered reviewing the rules on a daily basis :-P
avatar
Djaron: the blue answer appeared while the "processing" little widget was spinning on my message sending box :)
anyway my alt account already has my main name within, so i would suppose it doesnt fall within this rule

ps: what is a "backup account" ? how does it work ? dont know about this feature
I'm assuming it's another account that you have associated with another email address. It's not a GOG feature.
avatar
fables22: You're right.
avatar
Djaron: 5 different langages supported.... Ok, granted
Now, there are people of different cultures/religions that can be found in each of 5 said langage-speaking countries (or croup of countries, for english, spanish and french.... dunno about many german speakin countries or former colonies though....)
I'd really rather not (read: I'm not going to) get into a discussion about what word is OK and what word isn't, and I won't be giving you a list. If you're unsure, always remember the very first rule, superior to the rest of them: Always treat others with kindness and respect, even if you don’t agree with them.
avatar
Shadowstalker16: Do we get a thread listing bans / warnings?
Nope. Not at this stage, anyways.

JMich: By the way, especially with the cheat and spoiler section, we do need a spoiler tag for the forum. While Barefoot_Monkey has added one through a script, it is a client side tag, and it does depend on the client to be properly used. A server side implementation would be much appreciated, though no idea how easy or hard it would be.
Would love for you to poke the forum coders about it, just be careful that they don't poke back. I've heard that they bite.
I can try, but it'll be months at best :)

Senteria: Question: are you going to moderate the entire forum by yourself? I mean I don't see a lot of blues around yet. Will you recruit people for moderating the forums?
We'll see. There's been talks about recruiting moderators and there's also been some suggestions, but I don't think we'll be doing it any time soon. All GOG staff have the same moderating capabilities, so more than likely I'll ask a few of my colleagues to use them, if it seems necessary as per the forum rules.

swatkat: I would like to report : HypersomniacLive and tinyE for breaking the following rules:

- Abuse or encouraging abuse of the reputation system and the “report as spam” system - for the explanation of how our forum features work, have a look at the Forum and feedback section in our FAQs here.
- Spamming, bashing, flaming, trolling, or abusing the reputation and/or “report as spam” function.
- Posting something that is knowingly false.

I had lost all my rep (from 1000 rep) and got a lot of my forum topics deleted even if i helped other users because they were reported as spam. I suspect them - really like the admins to investigate their forum behavior.
To this I can just say that, unfortunately, I won't be banning anyone based on PAST offences. However, feel free to, as soon as you see or suspect the said behaviour, to report the users. But please do so via a PM, not as a forum post. Thanks.

swatkat: Ok thanks for mentioning how the procedure works. We need to clean the forum once and for all.
Do you guys understand you are basically losing money on your business from the un-friendly forum and no help ?!
Well, more than anything, we'd hate to see newcomers leave because they find our forums hostile - hence why we think that attempting to patch things up here is worth it.

liquidsnakehpks: Looks like standard rules like any other forum i have been , the drm free crowd will be hard to tame here , good luck fables
I'm surprised more people don't realize this. It's not like any of the points in the new Code are unheard of, unusual, or out of the blue. Thanks!

JunglePredator: But...

They ARE out of the blue.
They're not - the previous set of rules that has been around for quite a while wasn't much different from the new one - if anything, it was more vague. Other than that, I gave everyone a heads up two weeks ago. But now it's a massive surprise all over again...

micktiegs_8: So is there a point to using the readily available function of making ourselves unreachable through PMs? If people have to set themselves as publicly available all the time, shouldn't the option be removed?

edit: regarding what's been said, just an echo. Posting unreleased game content is allowed if the NDA is passed date, non-existent, or broken by others. However, I'm guessing this is referring to people data-mining the catalogue entries and API.

Bumping threads is necessary in some cases. Very helpful cases.

What's considered off-topic should really be up to the OP of said thread. I never used to mind a little derailing from TinyE back in the day. TinyE is definitely not the only person who immediately derailed threads in the past either. On that note - what about threads that essentially nonsense to begin with? Threads that beg for random discussion?
What makes you think that people have to set themselves as publicly available?

dtgreene: It might just be me, but this particular phrasing irritates me, as it implies that nobody lives in the same time zone as Fables, which is clearly false; Fables, of course, lives in the same timezone as herself.

A better way of phrasing it, which avoids the problem, is "not everyone lives in the same time zone as Fables".
avatar
micktiegs_8: Or you could have simply responded the way TinyE did with 'I see your point'. Thank whoever that I'm on the internet where slight misinterpretation ALWAYS leads to nothing.

I'll rephrase it: Not everybody lives in the same time zone as Fables; therefore, not everybody can be monitored and moderated within a timely manner. Fables is a human, and requires sleep. During this sleep when nobody is moderating the forum, problems that are usually moderated by Fables may happen.
I also get weekends and holidays! :)

skeletonbow: I could be wrong, but it is my impression that we've been told "these are the rules going forward and they will be enforced, however they are not being enforced retroactively", which means that violations of the rules, and problems that predate the new rules going into place will not be investigated or handled. It's well known that the rep system has been heavily abused in the past and that they've stated they're aware of it and do not have the manpower to dedicate to doing anything about that any time soon.

So I would not expect any modifications to people's rep score based on past events to be happening going forward, and I can't imagine how they could trivially automate undoing past gaming of the rep system, nor can I imagine them paying an engineer days/weeks of salary to sort out such a trivial matter in the grand scheme of GOG's overall business operation and finite limited resources.

Yeah, it sucks that some people have had their rep artificially interfered with but going forward everyone should pretty much straight out ignore the rep score value entirely and treat it as a thing of minor legacy importance that has and will have minor side effects for some people going forward until GOG has the resources to commit to improving this aspect of the site which is most likely not going to be any time remotely soon.

So what does it all mean? It means put the past behind us all, and honour and respect the new rules and if there are new problems that arise which cause some people problems to bring it up privately with our community manager in a friendly manner and see what if anything they're able to do about it. They may be able to handle some things right away, and other things may have to wait for the future even if it is inconvenient. The more people affected by a given issue, likely the sooner it will get looked at later, but with emphasis on later.

But of course, I could be wrong too... :)
Thanks for writing this! It's pretty much exactly to the point, and I'd like to once again highlight the fact that I will not be looking into any past offences, nor will I ban people based on past offences, nor will I investigate past rep abuse. However, if anyone has a suspicion that they're rep is being serially & systematically decreased by other forum users, please do let me know.
