With the update I posted yesterday to my Linux Mint beginner's guide, I've decided to run another giveaway to draw some more attention to it (and perhaps convince some more users here to try it - take a look at the guide if you're interested).

The information in the guide should still be helpful... it's written with Linux Mint in mind, but much of it applies to Ubuntu too. If you need anything more specific just ask :)

This is a lovely thing to do. I heartily endorse the message to try Linux (been running Ubuntu myself for quite a few years now, and wouldn't ever want to go back to non-Linux (though different distros than Ubuntu are constantly beckoning - my main reason to stick with them so far is that their level of polish and making everything fit well together keeps being way ahead of the competition)).

I'd like to be in for one of the following three games, in order of preference:
* Lords of Xulima Deluxe Edition
* Victor Vran
* Dex Give yourself some time for it. Don't expect everything to work exactly as you want it out of the box. It'll be usable out of the box, but many things will have a learning curve, and other things you will just really want to be done differently.
The good news is, almost everything which annoys you - or which unfortunately has an actual bug and doesn't work at all - can be changed and made to work. But when you're new to Linux, it'll be a bit of a struggle to find your way to the useful advice on what to do to get there. There'll be a lot of terminology which will be unfamiliar; a lot of rather arcane-looking commands to run to find out the information you need to know what it is that's not doing what it should be doing. You can go a lot deeper with Linux than with Windows, and that's frequently a lot more efficient as well - but yeah, it'll take time to become familiar with it all.

Went to add a game to the Wine appDB and almost made a f*&^% $p, did a reread of my addition, and found I listed my distro as Mint, when I installed ubuntu on tuesday. Take it easy and remember Linux ain't windows :D

I'm not so new to linux I run Mint cinnamon. But I want something else or maybe do I clean install again.

Every time you have a giveaway, I think "I won't enter for anything this time" and then, every time, you have something that is well up on my wishlist and I end up entering. It's happened again.

Lately I've been playing around getting Arch installed on my Dell Venue 8 Baytrail based tablet. The install was a bit of a bugger, jumping through hoops of a 32 bit uefi with a 64 bit processor. Weird. Now that I have it installed though, its coming along. Wifi is a bit dodgy, and bluetooth doesn't work.

Hopefully I'm going to be able to get touchegg and i3 and some scripting to kind of emulate windows tablet mode (everything is fullscreen). It's working somewhat already.

One day when I'm retired I might try Linux again. :)

I don't like struggling with getting stuff to work, which is why I went back to Windows 7 after upgrading to 10. Well, I did take the time to install new nForce drivers to get 10 to install well, but still went back to 7. Linux is an order of magnitude or two more work, so not going to try it right now.

Not in, but thanks a lot for the GA and for your efforts to bring Linux closer to the community. Leaving a +1 *tips hat*.

Until about 2 years ago I only ever ran linux on my home pc (mainly Fedora but I was prone to regularly trying new distros lol) however the lack of mainstream gaming caused me to leave. Would be more than happy to go back. How is linux gaming today?

Perhaps you should give it a try or at least have a quick read through the guide, if you're interested in it... when I started using I had no Linux experience at all but in my experience over the 3.5 years that I've been using it, in general it's actually *much less* hassle than Windows (obviously this is very much dependent on distro choice & hardware, e.g. if you have hardware by any Linux-unfriendly manufacturers).

That's not to say that it's been perfect, but the problems I've ran into with it generally haven't been much harder than many of the problems I've ran into with Windows. Most of the difficulty has only been relative, due to having 20+ years of prior DOS/Windows experience vs 0 experience with Linux (at the time I started using it).

If it really was so much more hassle I'd hate reinstalling Mint as much as I do reinstalling Windows & wouldn't currently be planning to dump Windows completely when I build my next PC :)

Much better, and getting better all the time with more & more Linux releases coming out. And Wine is very good too :)

Once you get hooked on Linux, you start only buying hardware with known good Linux support, and everything gets easier at that point.

One thing that is tough, is keeping up with which manufacturers actually have good Linux support. I've been anti-ATi for a long time due to how poor the fgrlx driver was back then. Now, it sounds like ATi is poised to, if they haven't already, take the crown from nVidia as the best graphics card for Linux.

My next laptop may well be AMD/ATi powered....
