Bad news about those Win games, instead, but it's good that the trick works at least for DOS titles.
One way to get round the problem might be Windows 7 instead of 8/8.1. I tested the following on another computer under Windows 7 32bit (although it should also work under Win7 64bit). There all you need is the following: http://sierrahelp.com/Utilities/SoundUtilities/PutzlowitschsVistaMIDI_Mapper.html - follow the installation and programme running instructions.
Then things work just like the midi mapper used to under WinXP. This means you do not have to mess with 'midiconfig=' / 'config=' in DOSBox. The midi device you select automatically receives the ID 0.
(When in doubt check under DOSBox with 'mixer /listmidi'.)
Apart from that I tested it with Lemmings for Windows (a pre DirectX Windows game) and the Antares Windows XP installer for the Win95 version of Z. In both cases midi output was automatically played through my hardware SC-55 and not through the internal software midi stuff provided by Microsoft.
