CMOT70: Also AMD legacy driver support leaves a bit to be desired, anyone tried playing Neverwinter Nights with a newish AMD graphics card?
Yes. Works fine.
I lean towards AMD because without competition shit will get worse and nVidia have shown to be too ready to interfere and pollute the games themselves. if they had their way you wouldn't need Sony, or 2K, or Rockstar, or EA or anybody. it'd all go through nVidia.

MaximumBunny: "Intel/AMD overheats" - What cooling solutions have you used in these configurations?
In my experience it really depends on the chip and clockingspeed, I remember having and XFX Geforce 9600 GT which was a real cooker (around 90°C).

MaximumBunny: I like how people's opinions go back to the 90's for their impressions of AMD/NVIDIA like it's valid. We went from the Commodore 64 to smartphones and they think nothing has changed since then. Wouldn't you like to have a modern opinion? "Intel/AMD overheats" - What cooling solutions have you used in these configurations? And are you aware of technology advancements in GPUs, iGPUs, and APUs since then? :P
Very true. People just had this or that experience way back when and that became truth forever. I've seen that way too many times and really apart from actual voodoo, I've never seen as much voodoo with customers more than computer customers.

Maybe they think computers are magic?

Of course, computers are magic!!! You don`t want to tell us the opposite, or do you? Well, then you are a heretic and have to burn on the stake!!!
I voted for Nvidia

Agreed. Also, I thoroughly enjoy being referred to as a magician.
NVIDIA: I've been using NVIDIA GPUs since the Riva TNT era, after all they are the creators of the first "real" Graphics Processing Unit with the GeForce brand... Right now, with the Maxwell architecture, they have the technology edge over AMD-ATI as well. Intel? A GPU maker?!? Oh please, don't make me laugh :-P

Quoting the Riva TNT Wikipedia: "The TNT shipped later than originally planned, ran quite hot, and was clocked lower than Nvidia had planned " Oh nvidia, always so hot and underperforming :P

And really, the 3DFX Voodoo2 was the first real (no quotes) gaming GPU, it was released about 6 months before Riva TNT (also: Riva TNT never had the GeForce brand)

So why am I nitpicking like a nerd on the interwebs? Because you said you were using nvidia *because* of things that never happened. I just thought that was slightly amusing.

And finally Maxwell has no particular edge over GCN 1.3, in some things it performs better, in some things it performs worse.

So, in the end you just pick nvidia... because.. of reasons, I guess..

It's not often you see a good post like yours in these threads. Anyone that's been alternating brands since the 90s should know this to be true.

I prefer AMD because AMD is cheaper. nVidia's terribly pushy marketing and proprietary features also really annoy me.

Heheheh! I'm gonna have to remember that. :D

Oh why oh why did 3dfx have to go under? :(
Hey speaking of 3dfx....

I use solely Linux on a laptop, so my choice is either Intel, or Intel / Nvidia hybrid.

Nationalistic pride made me always buy ATi when it was a Canadian company. That was a long time ago, and since then I've had way too many fights trying to get AMD to run with Linux, and I haven't heard that there has been any huge improvement.

Truth be told, my curvy laptop is a Intel HD4600 / Nvidia GTX765, and I find I rarely use the Nvidia card. The Intel HD4600 is usually "good enough".

Honestly, I don't care which brand to back in terms of GPU. I still use nVidia and have used ATI/AMD in the past. However, the one thing I have learned is that some manufacturers are terrible for either brand.

Real Examples: We have had at least 1 Geforce 9600 GT through PNY (which was used on my brother's computer) and 1 Geforce 9800 GT from PNY (which was on mine). Unfortunately, both of these cards had fans completely fail after a year or two. Not necessarily the fault of nVidia, but rather PNY.

In short, avoid PNY manufactured Geforce cards. They are notorious for malfunction. Heck, we even had problems with two old Geforce 6600 GTs from PNY (though a different variety).

For anyone interested in purchasing a Geforce card from nVidia, stick with EVGA. Of course, some of the manufacturers are just as good (reported no problems from Biostar with a Geforce 8600GT I had). So far, every EVGA video card I had ended up with good fans.
