Shmacky-McNuts: Wizards of the Coast blows donkeys for quarters. So yeah go with a group that can either print out or find some AD&D:2nd edition content.

I cannot stand what trash the video games are using the new rule sets. The games based on 2nd ed. not only make more sense, but you will find the best pen & paper games use 2nd ed. structure to be more enjoyable.

So in short- pen & paper plus video games = pretty good.

The original D&D wasn't bad...but it was...how to put it....lacking. I had a buddy that had everything, like no joke, everything from the beginning. I went through a lot of it but just kept going back to 2nd edition because it's like a polished version =D

HunchBluntley: On a related note, it also occurred to me that, while also comedy, the webcomics DM of the Rings and Darths & Droids (among others) are also pretty good at showing what a tabletop RPG can be like as far as player interaction (both [i]among[i] players, and between players and DM), meta-gaming, what can happen when the DM tries to railroad the players too much, and many other elements.
I've read some of Darths & Droids, it's friggin' hilarious :-D

I absolutely hate the THAC0 of 2E however, so that scores a win for 1E for me. :D

I haven't played in forever to be honest. Cannot recall what it does. But I'm having fond memories of the Sega Genesis title XD

Explaining it to new players is a royal bitch. Where as with 1E all I have to do is say "Look at this" and they get it. xD
I got thinking and I remembered that my boxset for "The Haunted Tower" included rules and parts to make the (massive three book adventure) in to more of a board game with dice movement and other such.

ARG! For some odd reason that reminded me when I was young and a friend got this craptastic board game with a VHS tape to play as the DM lol XD

It was actually inspired by DM of the Rings, so consider checking that out, too. The main difference between the two (besides the fact that one is based on Star Wars and the other on The Lord of the Rings[i]) is that, while the GM in [i]Darths & Droids is competent, adaptable, and fairly creative, the DM in DMotR is an often-arbitrarily-restrictive railroader. EDIT: Also, DMotR is finished, and hs WAAAY fewer strips than however many D&D is up to these days. (Then again, if you get sucked into reading all the gaming anecdotes in the comments on DMotR, it could easily take you forever to get through that one, too.)
