If we're pushing a JRPG, I'd definitely put the Trails in the Sky series over Caligula. The translation is stellar, the gameplay is fun, and there are so many homages that fans of the genre will probably find a new one every playthrough.

Oh, and Estelle is a great character. Even better than Joshua. Brooding dude with a dark past? Meh, been done. Girl who squees at anything kawaii but still lives up to her father's martial legacy? Sign me up!

Yeah, the 3 first entries + KotDP could arguably be considered some of the best RPG.
I wouldn't have PoE2, though the author argument that it's real time or turn-based could be acceptable.
Iratus? I haven't played it, so I can't say for sure, but from what I understand from various reviews, it's not spectacularly better than Darkest Dungeon.
As for Caligula Effect, the only reason I can see is that the list hasn't been made by people who play games but by the marketing dep: even if you wanna have a JRPG on the list, there are so many better choices on GOG: Dragon's Dogma, the Legend of Heroes series, the Ys series...

Ultima 7 has some great CRPG moments, but the realtime combat (without pause, if I remember correctly (haven't played it since 1994)) is pretty hard to handle. I beat the first Ultima Underworld in 1995, and started the sequel soon after, but never got very far. Great stories in both, though.

I could never get into Dragon Age, and I tried 3 times. There's just nothing that stuck with me about the story, other than murdering that one guy in the initiation, which just made me pissed.

My favorite game that gen was Fallout New Vegas, which for a game with this level of jank, means a lot. Absolutely worth playing just for the world and atmosphere.

Well, that's a new one, or at least I haven't heard that "word" before. I see your kind is still making up words to "safely" call people you don't like names. Good thing that actual phobics aren't on your "protected" list.

Fact is, I don't recommend Caligula Effect, either, but that's because I don't like having to become "best friends" with 300 virtual high school students (the social aspect of the game). Also, the pacing is a bit slow, at least in part due to that stupid social aspect. Also, I don't know Japanese, so the fact that the environmental text isn't translated bothers me. I also don't care for the music much, which I only mention because everyone says it has great J-Pop (a way too generic term) soundtrack.

Star Wars Knights of the old republic looks interesting, but I'll much rather get the DOS game Star Wars Dark Forces.
