Fasten your seatbelts and get ready to soar through the sky or steamroll your way through the battlefield with your ever-reliable tank! These 7 unique war games will satisfy even the most hardcore simulation fans.

Even with different conflicts, new machines of war, and varying technologies, the challenge for gamers remains the same - win against all odds. Today on GOG.COM, we welcome 7 retro war games that have been brought back from the past under the logo of video game publisher, Retroism.

Gunship!
This is the third part of the award-winning simulation game series created by MicroProse. In Gunship!, you become an assault helicopter pilot during the fictional conflict between Russian forces and the NATO army. Gunship! combines action and realism, while also providing players with micromanagement options in the form of customizing your gunship to fit your style of play.

Fleet Defender: The F-14 Tomcat Simulation
As the game’s developers stated in 1994, this title was the first flight simulator to accurately recreate carrier-based operations. Fleet Defender: The F-14 Tomcat Simulation gives you the chance to hop in the cockpit of the screaming sonic-speed fighter aircraft. Experience the excitement of a catapult launch from the carrier, dynamic air-to-air combat, and the challenge of landing on a pitching deck at sea.

F-19 Stealth Fighter
A simulator for all retro-gaming lovers, F-19 Stealth Fighter was in many ways ahead of its time. For example, during missions, the perspective of the camera could change depending on your assigned character. Moreover, the game showers you with over a hundred missions set across the globe - from the deserts of Libya to the arctic North Cape.

1942: The Pacific Air War
This time, we travel a little further back in time to become a pilot during WWII. 1942: The Pacific Air War lets you sit behind the cockpit of one of 10 available planes from both Japanese and US air forces. Using the planes available, you can try to either cement historical events or attempt to alter them. A great game for all history buffs.

Command HQ
From legendary designer Dan Bunten, the creator behind such classic strategy titles like M.U.L.E. and The Seven Cities of Gold, Command HQ gives you complex control over a country during the global war - countries from both the past and future. But trigger-happy gamers must watch out - as the technology in the campaign progresses, the risk of a devastating nuclear war becomes more and more real.

Across the Rhine
Another WWII game, this time set in Europe, Across the Rhine, is a strategy game that gives you the chance to witness the war from the nerve-wracking perspective of a tank commander. Take complete operational control of a single-tank platoon and climb your way to the top, eventually taking command over an entire American or German battalion.

Shadow Ops: Red Mercury
We finish our list with an all-out FPS title, Shadow Ops: Red Mercury. This time, your enemies are terrorists who wish to destabilize the world’s political and economic stage. In order to stop them, our hero, a member of an elite anti-terrorist group, must set off on a string of stealth and assault missions across the globe.

So, what will be your role - a pilot, a commander, or a special forces soldier? Check out our retro war games sale and let us know in the comments what was your choice!

Gudadantza: Wasn't F-117 a revised and improved version with the same content of F-19? Apart collectionism is any interest of owning both? F-117 even have the option of flying the imaginary bird with its own model of flight fromthe original.

trusteft: One difference which makes for me F-19 better, or at least worth getting here (outside of nostalgia), is that night missions are actually dark, really dark. For some reason F-117A no matter what time the missions take place they all appear to be at dusk.
I think I am going to try it myself and will try out getting another version of gunship! here. The steam version is not perfectly funtional out of the box. The discounts are a great opotunity.

Time ago I did read that F-19 ran much better than F-117 over dosbox. I mean, that it didn't have the little problems of speed dependant variations of speed in gameplay. Of course worse graphics and worse sound.

Greetings

I remember 1942: The Pacific Air War getting a glowing review in PC Gamer (UK). That magazine was so well written it made me want to try the game. I don't believe I ever saw it in a store around here. Probably just as well; (vehicle) simulations were never really my thing...

I have played several missions of the GOG version of F-117A. I encountered no issues with speed or other technical matters.
I even made a couple of videos and even watching them and editing them I never saw anything weird.

I saw a new copy of this game with its book/novel size/manual and precinted big box, around year 2000 :) for 50€ in a videogame store. I remember it because I was surprised to see that retro title available at that price.

If I am not wrong Pacific Air War was some kind of prequel from the developers of European Air War. Another sim that I will wait here patiently. Best if it is exclusive and fixed for new computers. I do believe it is very wished.

Yes! Comanche, please!
"Target Destroyed" - I never managed to finish the last mission of the first Comanche but it was a real milestone back then because of the voxel technic and the possibility to hide behind mountans and use them to your advantage. Afaik it's still possible to get it to run (at least on Win7 - don't know about Win10) with a patch that can be found in the net. Without patch it is simply too fast to play.
Whoa, this is some serious retro goodness for those who love the genre: I remember playing F-19 on the Atari ST back in 1990 :)
I'm in dire need of good first person shooters.
Shadow Ops seems good at glance, any opinions about it?

Speaking of flight sims that haven't been mentioned yet, Battlehawks 1942, Fantastic. Especially the ST version I know more than any other.
For those interested in Across the Rhine, there was a collector's edition that had a 2nd CD with a WWII documentary film that covered the same battles as the game. I know as I do have the Collector's Edition (still sealed, with a White Label version I used, back in the day!), but I am sure you can find the extra on the web somewhere.
Maybe for those grognards who like that kind of stuff, but these kind of simulation games have always bored the snot out of me. *shrug*
These are all great games. Don't know why they took so long to come to GOG though, they've all been on Steam for several years, so I ended up picking them up there. May pick them up again on a steeper sale at some point though.
One of the best ever flight sims was Flying Corps Gold
