There’s an old proverb that says “Humanity runs on coffee.” Developers from Toge Productions really took those words to heart. Here are 5 reasons why their indie game, Coffee Talk, is the perfect title for all lovers of the magnificent, aromatic drink.

1. There is a lot of coffee here. Like… really a lot.
As you become a barista in an alternate version of Seattle, you’re tasked with filling up endless cups of coffee. Every order placed will teach you something about the beautiful art of coffee making, because, just like all people, every cup of coffee is different. As Lasheli Dwitri Witjaksana from Toge Productions sums it up, even at the studio, tastes vary strongly:

- We have different preferences regarding coffee types that we like. Some of us love half-shot cafe latte and cappuccino, others prefer espresso, and some don’t even drink coffee at all! We also have a team member who loves to experiment by mixing coffee with various ingredients.

2. It shows that coffee is more than a drink.
The game is a visual novel set in a city where our world meets a fantasy one. Elves, orcs, and even demons walk among people, their lives pretty different, apart from one thing - they all love coffee. While preparing cups for them, you’ll have the unique opportunity to listen to their fascinating stories. For developers from Toge Productions, based in Indonesia, coffee is not only a drink but also a part of culture and heritage. As Lasheli Dwitri Witjaksana describes:

- For us, coffee is like an ordinary drink, but with an extraordinary effect. It helps elevate one’s mood. Living in the fourth largest coffee producing coffee in the world, coffee has shaped our lives and cultures as well. That is why you can see many coffee stalls or “warkop” (warung kopi), as we call it in Indonesia.

3. It shows how coffee can be inspiring.
Idle chat is one thing, but some of the best ideas come to us while we’re sipping coffee. Not surprisingly, the black beverage became the main inspiration for Coffee Talk. The idea was born during an internal game jam. One of the developers came up with the thought of recreating the vibe of being inside a coffee shop, accompanied by a cup of warm drink, and just relaxing. Coffee Talk is also inspired by a Japanese TV series “Midnight Diner”, where the audience can enjoy many heartfelt stories.

4. Coffee lovers will love its unique atmosphere.
The lo-fi jazz music in the game creates a mesmerizing feeling of ease and relaxation. That’s exactly the feeling of a real coffee shop, and what the game’s developers aimed for. Coffee Talk is all about the feeling and experience of the day unwinding slowly before our eyes. Just like the coffee itself, life comes here in all flavors - from sweet and energetic, to bitter and sad.

5. It will make you want to fill another cup.
Last but not least, watching all the tasty looking coffee on screen makes you want to get a cup (or two) for yourself, as well. So, turn on the kettle, fill the cup with an aromatic drink, and get Coffee Talk from GOG.COM to receive a truly unique gaming experience.
Coffee?! Heresy! Tea Drinkers Master Race!
high rated
A+ art
B story
D replayability

It's really disappointing how little what you do actually matters. There is a sort of ending to the larger story that involves getting one drink "wrong" on purpose, but you're better off just YouTubing for it. Almost nothing else you do matters. I got half the "good" endings even when I tried to mess everything up on purpose. And I even broke up a couple and they got back together without any explanation when my score got higher under the hood, I assume?

The whole game aspect of it is kind of a mess. Far from a "perfect" game for anyone, coffee lover or not.

Better watched than played, but you can support them if you want for the ok story and you can go through the gameplay motions and pretend that it matters to get a sort of game-like experience.
