I failed to kill the two guys the first time, and after that, each time I load the game to that point, the right side of the screen turn black(except for the rain and the characters) and the buttons are unresponsive.
Is anyone else having that problem?

This happens on some computers where you save and reload in room with rain. Assuming your computer can handle DirectDraw (some modern laptops can't), try switching to DirectDraw mode by running the winsetup.exe file in the game's folder. That usually does the trick.

Any other workarounds?

The only other workaround I can suggest is to save your game in a room without rain before that shootout (when you are playing the other character), and if you fail the shootout reload from there.

The problem will persist if you reload the same save from when you first experienced the bug. Switching to DirectDraw will fix the problem but only if you have an unaffected save file from before the time you noticed the bug, and as long as you keep it set to DirectDraw you wont experience this problem again.
I had no choice but to restart the game.
No loss, though.

Does that mean you got it to work?
Yeah, Like I said, I restarted the game.
Thanks for the help.
Apparently this is a problem that occurs on 64 bit windows systems, when the player is in a rainy environment. According to the developers, fixing the bug would involve rebuilding the game from scratch (probably something to with being made for 32-bit windows) so there won't be a patch.

Related to this, gunfights seem to be very crashy. I recommend saving very often so as to cut down on backtracking.
I have also encountered the same bug and I think I encountered this glitch twice. One was during the shootout in the rain, the other one is in the testing chambers in Center 7. I passed the shooting test (fortunately), but the next time I tried the two dummy targets are broken (the "Matrix" is shining through them) and are not shooting, I also cannot "kill" them.

I am playing on OS X using CrossOver 12 with windowed mode and 4x scaling with anti-aliasing. I thought it was because of Wine, but it looks like people have the same problem on Windows...

I have a different, unrelated issue, every time I get to the shooting scene and complete it (telling Matthias to jump over the wall), the screen fades to black and the sound starts skipping, usually the rain noise but also gunfire if the last goon is still shooting. the game is frozen from then on, and i have to force quit.

I'm running OS X 10.8.3, and the bug happens in wineskin's window and full screen modes. I haven't tried restarting the game from a brand new save, but i'll try that next.
I experienced the same problem. During the first real gunfight -not the one when you must shoot the dummies- I died the frist time. I load the autosave the game automatically made and then the right part of the gamescreen where the baddies were, was blurred like in the screenshot of HazeSpire. The movements of the baddies were still visible, so I managed to shoot them. Very annoying bug, though, pulls you out of the game :-(
Very annoying bug. What's more is that the game could actually be configured by default to the non buggy mode, which would hopefully prevent some users from quitting the game early.
