Hello there!

Me and my friend have bought the game, we would like to play this game together but the game crashes the second we select "join game" (In fact, "initializing network" written in green appears on the screen before it goes back to the desktop). Is there a patch or something that is supposed to fix this?

Same here! Come on GOG I bought the game for the multiplayer. At least post a workaround or something, If a feature in a game doesn't work you should prominently list it in it's description, because this is not the first time I've had issues GOG games.
I'm not even trying to play it online, we setup a LAN game and it just crashes my friends game as soon as he hits "Join Game".

Same here. It's really annoying and hopefully GoG can produce a fix for this.
"In late 2012, GameSpy ceased supporting many old games, including Gangland. As a result, only LAN play is possible*, and the game will crash when attempting to join a multiplayer game, unless changes are made to your firewall's settings.

To make LAN multiplayer work in GangLand, please block this IP in your firewall, for both TCP and UDP:
69.10.30.248

If possible, only apply this rule to GangLand. If you're using any other games that rely on GameSpy to search for available servers, and you set the IP block globally, you might need to disable/delete the block before playing those games."

I'm saving you guys the trouble of looking up Gangland on the support pages. That's where i found it. I simply presset "Support" at top of the page and looked up "Gangland".

Confirmed this works but we did it a bit differently.

Guide:

1.) For person joining, Add new OUTBOUND rule in windows firewall, blocking all connections to the program gangland.exe (main directory)

2.) Load up tunngle (or whatever you use to play LAN network) and load up gangland and tell friend to host game in lan

3.) Press Multiplayer >> Join game (for person joining), wait til it loads (and NOT CRASHES!) then alt-tab and disable windows firewall rule, come back in and refresh lan and your DONE!

You must re-enable this rule anytime you click join-game from main menu!

Have fun and thanks to original OP for this!
