First off, I'm a non-binary pansexual. This is a very personal opinion.

The good "A person is no longer defined by the pronoun 'he,' 'she,' or 'they,' but by psychoscan" part is sort of shadowed by unrealistic (for the 22nd century as the whole) words like "The usual 'he,' 'she' remained" and especially very suspicious "everyone is 'himself' par excellence" ("he" for usage to all genders/sexes is considered sexist in English). Considering this is Polish, not a grammatically neutral language like Finnish, it's likely binary by design. But hey, the devs tried to do something beyond a tiny bit and the psychoscan is a cool thought.

Anyhow, what did you expect, the topic starter, from? Warsaw, we all know what is in Warsaw, Poland, in the 21nd century, please read the actual news. In that sense the devs are unusual even for the idea of defining by psychoscan. Yes I would like better choices in games but in theory Poland of the said 22nd century may be like that, this is okay. Let me be honest, yes some games did it fine, like in "Borderlands 3" or even (technically and less right into one's face) "Hob;" The game industry is a mirror (with huge diversity problems of its own) of reality and fiction is too.

It is somewhat depending on what in the work of fiction the devs wanted to deliver. The same way I can understand that "Doom" has Doomguy or "Destroy All Humans" has a male-mindset alien and "Mirror's Edge" has Faith or "Webbed" has an obviously female spider, it is a dev's choice. Are they all bad? No. "RedOut," "GRIP," "Skydrift Infinity" and "Paper Beast" are neutral, you're he/she/them, whatever you like, the games don't tell from all what I see: All good. I am with all my hands for the choice for everyone whatever it is but predifined (with "he," "she" or "them") stories deserve to be too. Yes, it can be misused or used right, it depends on the devs and the story itself.

Back to reality, more than 700 years passed in our English cup of tea, yet even here in the language of natural gender (rarity of the Indo-European family) some still in trouble and dare to not accept plural "they" as singular while "you" is far younger in use as such. To some of you foreign speakers from languages like Russian (hey, my native), Polish, Spanish or French any non-binary is pure blasphemy, the unthinkable, so I am not surprised. I will say with cybernetics, gene editing and the direction that English is going, the world will change inevitably, it'll be the direction it flows, no words on this forum will change the future, ever.

In short: Yes, nice to be present, and no, I am fine with anything honestly. If it is by psychoscan, fine. The devs, please consider more explicit choices if possible for the next project.

alcaray: God I hate these threads and all the losers who participate in them.
Kek <3 i love your irony here heheheheheh, good to see some sane ppl, or insane for that matter ;)

As for you @datrun

See... ppl pushing this pronoun circus nonsense assuming problems where there are NO problems.
Thats why every single time, this crap is forced into something and on ppl, it fails.

Forcing language change will also fail, because (smirk) germany is the best example for this
2 times 2 contradicting parties tried to FORCE language from top to bottom. It worked
temporary as long as the pressure was put on the ppl to use the new words, as soon as that
pressure was gone, the language returned to what it was.

As for the plural anouncing of ppl... that IS the royal we, this still is the usual pronouns we all
use just in "third person" so to say. Nothing more, heck even i used / use it as "fancy" speaking.
every once in a while. Don t make the mistake to think the plural anouncing does let go of the
HE / SHE, it does not.

From my perspective, the gaming community is/ was one of the most diverse and open minded
communitys i have ever seen. People who pushed this SJW circus already destroyed that and
now ppl start pushing back, with the only measurement that rly counts MONEY.
Look at the comic industry and you ll see what happens to games as well if dev studios
force this shitshow on us. There is nothing more to say about this.
low rated
Usage of singular "they" comes from people, not a gov't, Germany is an incorrect example.

"William of Palerne" is the 1st known usage as the singular, the 14th century, nextly, Emily Dickinson, William Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, and Geoffrey Chaucer used it in that sense. Those people are well-known and have done a lot to design our English. So, the flow goes from bottom up. On top, people's pronouns are not "nonsense" but a way to address a person, one's representation so to speak.

"They" is not "we." Please don't think "royal 'we' is the same as plural/singular 'they' and both are separate from 'he,' 'she,'" there is zero fancy in "they" as singular and it isn't the same. Let's respect history: English naturally ditched all the grammatical gender from words, I repeat, no English word has grammatical gender but only some pieces of it in some pronouns. Historically speaking, it seems to drift in that direction by itself, by the people, and that's totally fine with me. No gov't did so but us the people.

Look, Finnish is using singular "they" ("hän") for everything, no "he" or "she" exist in it, it has plural "they" separately yet the world didn't end, the country didn't collapse, the developers didn't go to Hell, the cows haven't made a rebellion against humanity and "Angry Birds," "Max Payne," "Control," or "Trine" are amazingly great games from Finland, the country where singular "they" is the default. It demonstrates that the fear has no ground in reality and that the game industry will lose nothing from being wider, only gain.

On diversity, see GDC. The industry notices by its own loudly: It has problems and needs work. I doubt a mere player can see the inside as well as the industry itself. I, as a player, don't care about money much, I care about stories as I said: If everyone will have the same background, culture, opinions, race and gender, the world will be far more boring. Imagine nothing but "Doom" everywhere, no player wants monocultures and clones among infinite clones, it'll be not fun. Being nice to others and hire good is no evil.

In total, the fear is nonsense. Nobody takes away your toys, don't fear having more choices.

Yes THEY is always plural refereing to more than one person.
I was talking about refering to ONE person in third person speech aka
the ROYAL WE when refering to one self or HE / SHE to another person.
yes the WIR IHR SIE is meant there from German so it was the correct interpretation.
Anyhow we re not talking semantic, words dont hurt anybody. What is hurting franchises
is forced language change to try and please a very small fraction of ppl that don t even
would care in nearby all of the cases...

Ofc that doesn t include all the twitter screamers, but i am nearby 100% sure those ppl
are just envious about nice things we have. Let alone having ANY sense of reality or
letting different thoughts in. We as communtiy were the most diverse ever raised until
2016 ppl started to split and rage and scream about things that aren t "real" or were
a "problem" in the first place.

Now forcing diversity, pronoun twitter circus in the games we love, will destroy them
and will destroy the communities build around them. We already have seen this
with Star Wars, Star Trek, Comics in the end, money will talk. People with start
to abandon franchises. That is a fact.

Anyhow, doesn t matter as i said earlier the original poster doesn t even participate
and this thread is of no substancial worth anyway, outside of scratching the line
to sensless raging on. Time to bail.

The original poster is a social justice warrior(ess) who is/are traversing the plains of GOG forums and casts her/his/their judgement upon new titles, evaluating them on a one and only criteria of inclusion of non-binary gender. Same discussion took place on Baldur's Gate 3 forum with exact same rants below. I would avoid engaging as this somehow shows value to the debate where there is none. Developers answered really well on this thread, so kudos to them.

midrand, hello a Russian. I am, as another native Russian over a VPN, can absolutely understand what you do here and from what the point. It's all too typical. Do I need to remind the horrific situation with human rights in our country, especially towards minorities? Not to mention the law prohibiting every non-insulting minorities words (allowed only negative). That's exactly why so many people leave: Ignorance, rejection of "the other" and conspiracy theories of all kinds. I will say: Enough of that nonsense.

Use "They" when unknown, solo, like you say "face" in Russian official papers. I don't see the "conspiracy" nor "warriors," I see a human. Put aside the polarization. Enough of either "take it all for us," "let's harm them" and "let's ignore, ignorance is bliss." The latter is why we still have an authoritatian regime. Well, why can't people not do "all or nothing?" Evolve, not revolt. The behavior of casting a person "the other," making up a conspiracy or a "holy war" and then "let's ignore" is far from a smart behavior, it leads to nowhere, as our place definitely shows.

The person kindly asked for an option in an RPG game, the devs replied, the person lightly suggested to consider. That's it, nothing else happen. No conspiracy. Put yourself in else's shoes, imagine in every RPG you can play only always as a log of wood (it), wouldn't you ask to be yourself? You might. Then put in the devs' shoes, not only it makes 3 streams of texts instead of 2, it'll be extremely hard to translate in not a few languages, especially in the devs' native and in our native it's practically impossible to do non-formally.

The devs approach to the world is intersting, I admit. I literally saw a pregnant "he" person in the game on an investigation, and also there is another who was "he" in one and "she" in another realm for a personal reason. If the game's society can accept that, basically a "male pregnancy," it can accept non-binary, I see absolutely no wrong. midrand, please be wise, play the game and you'll see, this game is what you call "SJW." The society in it is what Russia's must be. Nothing will go worse from an option, the game still be itself: You don't like, don't pick the option.

Thus put down your "war" and "the weapon," you came too late to the party.

GHOSTMD, with all due respect, memorize: English is not German, English was designed with the singular "they" word.

In the end, the topic maker got what their question was for, the devs answered, done, nothing to see here. As such, I will not pay attention to the topic afterwards, I just wanted to answer to the Russian and point out a few things related to the game that kind of surprised me.

Dear Flowerium!

I have a feeling you are barking up the wrong tree and missing the point completely. I respect your views on the aspect of human rights in Russia and do not support in any way how Russian government is handling LGBT or ethnical minority issues. Russian government handles all things in the same militaristic dictatorial manner nowadays, be it Navalny protest or LGBT march. There is no need to lecture me on this or to put me into the "typical Russian" box. I do not advocate repressions and discrimination against the minorities of any nature but neither do I support reverse discrimination and shaming of the majorities for the fact that they are majorities (be it race, gender identity etc.)

The only reason I have responded is because in another forum (BG3 to be exact), the same OP has gone into a lengthy debate about how a game is ONLY worth looking into if the said game has full support for transgender / non-binary / LGBT features. If it does, it's a worthy game. If it doesn't - then it's worthless. I have an issue with this narrow viewpoint and that is all I've highlighted. Developers as any art creators have their own vision of the object of art (game) and they may or may not include specific topics / characters / genders etc into the mix - I find it rather disturbing how they are constantly being judged nowadays. There are game plots where it makes sense to debate / highlight / incorporate these topics and then there are many others where it looks completely out of place - it is a GAME after all, object of entertainment.

Not going to comment on the game content - I don't think these issues are central to the game plot either. Nice game so far, I like it a lot.

Peace.
In the end, it's just video games. Enjoy them. Like them. Don't like them. Not everything needs to have a deeper meaning. Shake hands. Everything is fine :)
