So i created custom race and when i log into a game i get this.

Looks like you somehow got the Thalan ship set?

i never tried a custom race yet myself, but presumably it has to use one races ship set or another?,,, it is not going to materialize a new ship set out of thin air?

There are three separate theme settings: interface, ship icon, ship colors. They have to be deal with individually. You can also alter the ship appearances somewhat further by playing with the material/surface settings as well as the colors.
