I imagine some people will be buying the game during the sale this weekend and trying it for the first time, so this seems like a good time to share this advice.
If the game is slow, choppy, and prone to freezing, try disabling LEAN maps in the graphics options. I did this when experiencing those problems, and the game is now quick and responsive.
Another quick tip: Patch 1.7 is in beta and should be released soon. It revises starbase management, which can become a pain on the larger maps, so you might want to wait for the patch before starting a big galaxy.
