Anyone else not liking Curry's voice in the first and third games?

He makes Gabe come across like an utter douche.

I thought the second game's voiceover was a huge leap forward.

You are so going to be slammed by the GK fans.

It is generally considered that curry's voice was best of the portrayals of GK, and that the actor in the second game was 'weaker'.

BTW, GK is supposed to be pretty much a douche...

It's even part of the plotline in the third game, when he pretty much drives his friends away by the end.

OK, I just finished the third game.

Definitely the weakest of the three (the second was the best I think), and the saga took a religious manichaeistic turn that I did not like at all; the previous games had done a good job to describe the Ritters as paranormal activity hunters (aka shadow hunters), instead this explanation of their origin is lacking. The way the schattenjager sword is created is just ridiculous, the medallion's origin is not explained, and basically the whole story reeks of hasty ideas (and stupid dialogues) blended together to come up with a believable scenario and scenes. The ending is also really far-fetched and disappointing, and as Baggins said right above, Gabriel turns out to be a douchebag for far too long.

Last but not least, Curry's voice-over kept plunging with each passing hour. His slimy giggles during the conversation with Montreaux (whose voice-over was miles ahead of Gabe's) in the wine tasting room made me wonder who the hell thought Curry was the best person to voice a witty 35-year old.
Ya, third one is my least favorite for many of the same reasons (a lot of that is the fault of the story basically taking liberally from Holy Blood, Holy Grail conspiracy).

Actually as far as story I personally like the second the best. Followed by the first.

Sad thing is we'll never get part 4... Which probably would have seen GK grow out of his Douche baggery and 'grow up', and stop being the ove-raged 'player'.

There is a cut scene in the game script where you learn that Grace is pregnant with Gabriel's child. That would I think certainly lead him to settle down, and apologize for his chauvinistic behavior. Because deep down I think he really does care for her, even if he's lousy at showing it.

Also if you weren't paying attention Gabriel's douchebaggery appears in GK2's story as well. In as much that he ran off on his dangerous mission without telling Grace anything about it, and trying to keep her out of it as well. Which turned out to put him at extreme risk considering he didn't even bother to do his own research before leaving. He turns out to be fairly rude to her when she shows up uninvited. That's not to say that Grace is also a bit jealous harpy and mistreats Gerde, and Gerde is tad suspicious of her involvement since she was not invited to come in the first place.

They're both fairly selfish and stupid as characters; albeit they jump to doing things without telling each other. In the third game Gabe learns about the temple only minutes before he has to go there, not even caring enough to ask Grace in-between. I tried asking her in the small instance before going to meet Prince James and his answer was "meh, I don't feel like talking to her right now".

As for his douchebaggery in the second game, it isn't as prevalent due to the fact that when playing as him you spend almost all of the game fraternizing with the hunting club uber-douchebags.

Anyway, good adventure games, I can understand why they really made an impact when they were released.
It's a dear shame that the third game had a lot of content cut as well due to time and going over budget... There are also a lot of optional events that are really easy to miss, if you 'progress' the time the wrong way, and miss out on some of the explanations.

Infact I think there were quite a few 'optional' puzzles in the game, if you missed them, you could still beat the game, but half the story would be missed.

It was affected about as much as QFG5 and KQ8 was as well as I remember reading. Thanks to problems with Ken Williams, and later the companies that took over. Actually arguably QFG5 was impacted the most and some bad blood between the Coles and Ken Williams if you listen to their interview on the subject (obviously Ken would not intentionally mess with his Wife's work)!

When it comes to Curry's voice acting I'll just quote myself from previous thread of the same topic:

"I like his voice acting in both GK1 and GK3 and I also like many of his TV and movie performances. But I can't really say if his accent is bad or not as I'm not native English speaker."

I actually like the third game more than I liked the second game. While second game has interesting story, it has bad acting and weakest puzzles of the series (for example there's a sequence where Grace just explores museum without solving any puzzles, while third game has puzzles like "Le Serpent Rouge", which is one of my all time favourite puzzles). We also have to remember that back in the 90's Templars and conspiracies were a novel topic. There was Eco's excellent Foucault's Pendulum and Broken Sword had it's own personal take to Templar conspiracies, but the topic hadn't become uncool yet because of the Da Vinci Code.

Curry"s voice is perfect:)
GK being a douchebag is part of what's good about it! He's a primitive, self-absorbed white male that has problems thinking more than two-steps into the future but due to unbelievable strokes of luck survives life-threatening adventures and becomes a hero (kind of). This is how I understand the concept and I love it, mostly because it turns the whole idea of "noble selfless wise hero chosen by the forces of light to fight the darkness" bullshit upside down, he's completely out of place as a world's savior!

And I love his voiceover, it's funny. His comments at various objects are hilarious not because they are super witty but because they highlight the above-mentioned personality traits and clash his down-to-earth cynical thinking with the supernatural mystery kind of theme.

Though maybe I shouldn't say too much, I'm only an hour into the game (the 3rd one, 1& 2 I finished already).

As for accents - I don't really know much about this things. More a question: isn't exaggerating a right thing to do, when you want to make fun of sth? Like I'm thinking some people want GK to be an Indiana Jones-esque serious adventurer, whereas I think his persona is not to be taken seriously at all!

Not me !! I remember being drastically disappointed when Tim Curry wasn't "the voice" in GK2.
BTW to the original poster. You won't have to worry about Tim Curry's voice in the 20th anniversary remake, its being replaced. That might be your thing, but eh I think I'll stick to the original for many reasons.

... are you mad?
IMHO Dean Erickson did a far better job at portraying Gabriel Knight. Less of a misogynistic douchebag and more of a bumbling, carefree but well-meaning slacker. The way he always runs his hands through his hair, and his way of speaking that annoys people – as a character he's far funnier and more likeable than Curry's.
one of the things that made GK amazing was tim curry's voice

Yep. I'll be totally honest here: i love gk, but i think this remake is not a good idea.
At best, they will have spent 2+ years putting together somthing that is about as good. And i doubt it will be as good.
