Gabriel is supposed to not understand german. This was a problem when the game was voiced in german.
This was solved by using a bavarian dialect for the people which Gabriel was not supposed to understand.
I lived in Munich around the time when GK2 was released and the post office near the Marienplatz is not where it's shown. Also the shop for the coocoo clocks was missing at that time. Maybe there was once one, but not around the time when the game came out. Today it's mostly bars and clothing shops which you can find on that street.
According to the novel, the Knight family wrote all their books in English, even if they were Germans.
This was because of Gabriel, because they knew that some day a shadow hunter would arrive that only spoke that language and needed their diaries and notes.
