Character voices have pops and crackles. Could someone help me to correct this ?
This question / problem has been solved by _Zenger_image
thanks collector.
it's too bad sierra didn't have someone like you around while they were doing quality assurance!
_Zenger_'s solution definitely improves the sound quality but I still get occasional garbled audio. Sounds like a second or two of audio compressed to a quarter-second so I wind up missing a word here and there.
Any ideas?
edit: I wound up copying my config file over from GK1 (making sure to keep GK2's autoexec stuff) and it seems to have stopped the audio distortion. There's a slight delay but I think the delay is part of the solution so I guess I'm stuck with it (and it seems like some video clips are worse than others in this respect).

The update patches that I made were in response to the highly flawed 2006 releases. VU gave no official support for them, but instead directed their customers to their forums for support. I was a regular on the official forums, and was the only one that was able to give support. In essence, I was VU's support for the collections. I invested around $90US buying all four collections so I could analyze what they did wrong, and there was so much wrong. I got tired of guiding people through how to manually fix their collections, plus there was the problem of all the missing files, so I decided to provide the missing files and to automate it. That is when I created the patches.
I wish GOG could consult with me before releasing the Sierra AGI or SCI games. At least refer to my site. Even if all they did was to use my installers to prepare the games before they packaged them, there would be far fewer errors with their releases. I say this not out of vanity, but because I care so much about these great games. I know a lot of the potential problems that they will encounter with these games and could help them avoid them.

Take a look at this thread http://www.gog.com/en/forum/gabriel_knight_series/q_does_gabriel_knight_2_the_beast_within_feature_subtitles/_/1

Yeah, I'm trying that shortened config file thing now. Sounds good so far.
It's nice to see people who know so much about Sierra's technology in here, BTW. I'm constantly impressed by GOG's forum.
edit: Didn't totally fix it. Oh well.
edit2: Still testing.. As the .72 default config file mentions, setting CPU speed to max will sometimes affect audio. I'm having better luck with ~10000

I'm not getting any audio issues. Do you have a save game from a point where you are getting the audio problems? I can take a look, if you do.

It almost never happens with the exact DOSBox config that you posted in that other thread. I've only heard it two or three times since switching over and it's not reproducable.
I was originally setting CPU to max because there's a noticeable difference in loading speed between 10000 and max, but it's not worth the audio problems.
10000 is about the highest cycles that should be used with most Sierra SCI games. Anything higher is when you can start running into the many speed bugs. Even this is too high for some games. Some games, like Conquests of the Longbow and QfG1VGA will give you the "Unable to initialize your audio hardware" error if you have cycles set to anything higher than 7000-8000 cycles. "core=normal" and "cycles=10000" are the best settings to start from for these games and will accommodate the greatest majority of people.
I'm also having sound problems in GK2. The electric squeeks and pops really distort the speach, so you don't know what is being said.
I read that changing the sound from SB1 to SB16 should solve the problem, but it won't let me save the configeration without admin access. The thing is, I *have* admin access, so why can't I save it?
I suspect this issue is affecting my Saved Games as well, as it won't let me load any games now.
Can anyone help with this?
Terrible pops and crackles for me too, and the sb16 tweak does nothing to alleviate the problem. (nor Collector's suggested config changes)

it is probably UAC that is preventing you from saving your changes. The Program Files directory is a protected system folder. You can turn UAC off, but I would not recommend that. Microsoft added it for security reasons. If your Windows profile (Windows login) is admin, with UAC turned off malware such as spyware and viruses will run with admin privileges. To save your changes, go to Start and in the "Search programs and files" box type notepad.exe. At the top of the Start Menu, right click on "Notepad.exe" and choose "Run as administrator" to start Notepad. Go to File > Open... and browse to the config file to edit the file.
I just made a patch fix for the problems with this release. You can also try it. Patch Fix
I solved the problem in my machine but i don't know if it will work for others so please give this a go:
copy the files from folder \GOG.com\Gabriel Knight 2\Interlc into \GOG.com\Gabriel Knight 2\PATCHES and replace as needed. This is to turn off video interlacing and get a better video quality and i "think" it helped with the audio glitches/stretching artefacts somehow?
now open your dosboxGK2.conf on notepad and edit the following lines to match what i wrote:
core=simple
cycles=10000
sbtype=sb16
save the the file, close, run gk2 play for a while then alt+tab or alt+enter come back here and tell if this worked for your or not! i hope it works, it did for me!

You are awesome! This works a treat and fixes the sound problems nicely. On top of that, I can now run your config util to run it windowed so I don't have to sit 15 feet back from my (rather large) monitor :).
P.S. Your site is fantastic, it helped me get my old bought versions up and running. I would not have had a chance without it.

Wow, you are amazing!
I followed your instructions about the Notepad thing, and it saved fine, with no fuss at all.
Then I installed your patch. The sound is perfect - no glitches or squeeks at all. Your patch seems to have solved all problems.
Thankyou so much. ( :
And your site is a little treasure trove!

Works perfectly! I wonder if there's any chance of getting the updates from this patch into the GoG download so that it no longer needs to be applied?
