I see people mentioning certain graphical filters which smooth out GK1 and make it less blocky. Where in DosBox do you place the switch, and could you kindly list the switches for graphical filtering as well?

GOG.com calls the file dosboxGK.conf
Thank you, but that doesn't really answer my question. Do you put in "scaler xxx" with xxx being the filter? Where do you put it in the config file?
If you have the game installed you'll find the config file in the game folder, look for the 'dosboxGK.conf' file.
Open the file with notepad and you'll find the scaler line under the [render] section. The commented section of the render section shows what values you can play around with.
Here's the render section from my dosboxGK.conf
[render]
# frameskip -- How many frames DOSBox skips before drawing one.
# aspect -- Do aspect correction, if your output method doesn't support scaling this can slow things down!.
# scaler -- Scaler used to enlarge/enhance low resolution modes.
# Supported are none,normal2x,normal3x,advmame2x,advmame3x,hq2x,hq3x,
# 2xsai,super2xsai,supereagle,advinterp2x,advinterp3x,
# tv2x,tv3x,rgb2x,rgb3x,scan2x,scan3x.
# If forced is appended (like scaler=hq2x forced), the scaler will be used
# even if the result might not be desired.
frameskip=0
aspect=false
scaler=normal2x
Thank you. Gave you both rep.
No problem ;)
Don't forget: You have to choose VGA mode in the configuration menu (INSTALL.EXE) for it to work.
By the way, I think that 2xSAI looks best.
Hmmm.... where does one find the game folder itself? I looked in GOG /DOSBOX/ GABRIEL KNIGHT ETC program folders and I see no config file!? Thx

If you installed the game to the default location the game folder should be
C:\ProgramFiles\GOG.com\Gabriel Knight
If your OS is 64 bit replace ProgramFiles with ProgramFiles (x86)
Thank you VERY much!!! :) Yes, Win 7 Prof thus x86 ProgramFiles
