I'm having some problems with the final confrontation in the furnace room. I just never seem to be able to headbutt the black wolf into the oven! I either just hit my head on the side of the oven (and Gabriel gets hot), or I'm too slow (and Gabriel gets shot).

Any advice? Exactly when should you click on the wolf while he's leaping infront of the oven? Is there anyplace in particular you need to click on the wolf? I've replayed this confrontation probably more than twenty times now, and I'm starting to get a bit annoyed.
Omg, I remember how annoyed I was with this part too. I consulted 10 different walkthroughs and they all suggested to wait until all four of the black wolf's legs were outstretched before clicking on it. That never worked. I probably went over it 20 times. In the end, I clicked on the black wolf BEFORE it jumped (almost as soon as that scene appeared) and ta-da. Have you tried this?

Don't wait until he is in front of the furnace. Click him when he's already on the air BEFORE the furnace. It only worked for me this way.

I ran into this too, took me a number of attempts until I got it
That entire sequence start-to-finish totally ruined the game for me. I couldn't even get him to the furnace.
Align your cursor with the coal-basin, just half an inch or so up from the horisontal line and click as soon as the black wolf come under the cursor. You should hit him approximately at the shoulder.

That was the case for me as well - I actually played through the entire game to that point and stopped.... picked it up again a few years later and finally pushed through.
Actually, solving that sequence without a walkthrough was a great achievement for me. The door puzzle is much more logical than anything else. Once you get the handle of it, it's really easy.
Thanks a bunch for the help! Finally got that stupid wolf into the stupid furnace. As was suggested, I clicked on him almost as soon as he started jumping, which did the trick. Odd, as all the walkthroughs and "let's play" videos I consulted indicated that you needed to click on him when he was infront of the fire. Bah.

And the chase "puzzle" I actually found sort of fun (a rarity in adventure games), once I realized I could actually close the doors.
This maze puzzle is the only reason I have never beat the game. :( I honestly have never even been able to get to the furnace section because the maze itself stumps me every time. Maybe I'll get lucky on a new playthrough and actually be able to complete it, it's been a few years since I last tried.

There's an exit on the bottom left corner. You start on the top left. Close all doors from the top to the bottom. That's the first row out. For the others, pay attention to where you push the wolf when you close a block. Keep pushing him towards the furnace room (bottom right). It takes a few tries, but you'll eventually figure it out.
