Hey everyone, long time Sierra gamer here. Thanks to the magic of GOG I recently re-purchased one of the only Sierra games I owned but never beat, Gabriel Knight Sins of the Fathers. I haven't beat the game yet (So please no discussion of the ending or of anything that happens after day 8), but the more and more I play this game, as much as I LIKE the character of Gabriel, he's just a horrible person.

- He constantly sexually harasses his only employee.
- Unintentional though it may be, his constant meddling seems directly responsible for Mosley getting killed.
- He basically assaults Malia at a cemetery of all places to try to date her
- Not to mention he steals from and impersonates a police officer in the first place to get a meeting with her (He'd already be in jail for this today, multiple counts of stalking, etc)
- Professor Hartridge dies because of GK as well, though he's less to blame for this one, IMO
- He seems to have little concern for Grace's safety, never advises HER to get out of town before he goes to Germany.
- He lets that creepy guy (who looked like Count Chocula to me) stand outside his store for a couple of days, freaking Grace out....he should've called the cops or kicked his ass...
- Worst of all, he repeatedly just stood there and let the slow-ass mummies kill him as I tried to navigate the outer 'ring' in Africa!

Am I being too picky or does the game really go out of its way to make him unlikable? I mean, I get the whole 'redemption to becoming a Schattenjaeger" angle, but still......

Am I being too picky or does the game really go out of its way to make him unlikable?
I think the game makes it quite clear from the very beginning that Gabriel is an unlikable scoundrel (or a lout, as Grace calls him).

His dream about the dragon reinforces that notion, too, that it's pretty much a quirk of fate that he has any hope of redemption.

I think that's part of what makes GK1 so great actually. It proves that an adventure game hero does not have to be a king, or the finest knight in the land, or a cop nominated for officer of the year. GK1 introduced a different kind of hero, which helped make it a different kind of game than other adventure games. There are people in real life who have committed a lifetime of sins but want to turn their lives around, and they can relate to or be inspired by Gabriel. I think Gabriel's evolution is part of why people like me love this game so much.
have you played GK2 + GK3?

Gabriel's redemption is one of the most beautiful character developments in gaming.

Gabriel and Grace's relationship is one of the most real and interesting in gaming. I'm replaying GK3 again just because of their story (after finishing GK2 for the first time after having played GK1, it only makes sense.)

I have not, but I purchased them all a couple weeks ago. Just finished 1 over the weekend. I heard GK1 has 2 endings (I tried to save Malia instead of killing her). Looking forward to starting 2 when I get some time. (6 month old baby at home makes gaming hard, but he actually beat the game for me; his flailing hands made the final click, haha)

I hope you enjoy them! GK2 is pretty easy and is all about the story+FMV cutscenes, GK3 is quite a bit harder with the puzzles, but again a top-notch story.

Thank you! I am sure I will. Nitpicks aside, I liked Gabe in part 1. I just could see him being torn to shreds by this society if the game were released today.
Well I got to play GK 2 for about five minutes last night, ha. Sat through all the opening movies then the wife brought dinner in, and no more time to play!

I already miss Tim Curry as Gabriel terribly. And I'm not sure how I feel about the graphical style. Was it a fairly revolutionary game when it came out? I'd moved fully from PC to console gaming by that time, for the most part. I'll always prefer the older art style than digitized people; I especially remember how horrible it looked in Police Quest Open Season.
Well, if you haven't played that much of it, it remains to be seen if you'll still miss Tim Curry by the end of the game. A new actor for a previously-known character takes some getting used to. Personally, I ended up not really missing Tim Curry. I like the unique voice that Curry gave to Gabriel, but overall I actually prefer the GK2 actor. Anyway, the good news is, Tim Curry returns in GK3.

I don't know if it was "revolutionary," but it was well-received. Some people hate it, but if you read any list of "greatest adventure games of all time," if GK1 isn't on the list then GK2 definitely will be.
loved gabriel 1 and I like gabriel 2 but a lot of the actors were bad or just unlikable wait til you meet grace in part 2. I hated her even though her story bits in the museum are some of my favorite parts of the game.
Grace was written to be unlikable in part 2. That wasn't the actress's fault. Blame Jane Jensen for that.

The acting in GK2 seems pretty darn good to me, at least when they're speaking English.

What do you mean she's unlikable?!?!?!?! I don't find her unlikable at all!!!

I guess you want her to be a flakey sleeze or something? And why is the acting only seeming good when they're speaking english? that's frikken hugely ignorant

Grace is downright mean in GK2. From the moment she meets Gerde, she speaks to her in a nasty tone of voice. All Gerde did was invite her into the castle (even though she didn't know her), allow her to sleep in the master's bedroom, and cook for her and everything. Gerde totally deserved that treatment!

Grace is only being mean to Gerde because she is jealous of her, which totally makes sense. I mean, when a man is more revolting to you than being hung by your hair over a bed of scorpions, it's totally logical to feel jealous when other women are around him. Who wouldn't?

And when she makes amends with Gerde in chapter 4, she says "It's Gabriel's fault he never tells me anything." How is it Gabriel's fault?

And then in chapter 6 she says "Well if you hadn't been so stupid not telling me where you were, I might have been able to save you butt days ago!" When you're best friend is suffering from lycanthropia, that's not the time to be berating him. Not that she had a good point anyway. Because if she had her way, Von Glower and Von Zell wouldn't have been stopped. Besides, if you had never seen your best friend outside of a room full of books, would THAT be the person you'd want saving your life?

I'd prefer she'd be like she was in GK3. Strong, smart, can be athletic or can be studious, but is also basically nice to people unless they clearly have bad intentions.

And why is the acting only seeming good when they're speaking english? that's frikken hugely ignorant
That's not because I don't know German. It's because I've read internet comments from people who do speak German, and they say that the actors in the game speak German terribly. Such comments can be found on a Let's Play of this game done by a Dutch person (not the guy himself but a few of the commenters said that)

Well, almost everybody speaks English in the game. If you were referring to the characters who ONLY speak English, that'd be just Gabriel, Grace, and the Smiths. That's not a lot of actors. And again, with those examples, I think the CHARACTERS might be unlikable, but I don't agree that the acting was unlikable.

If you meant that the actors who only spoke German in the game were the only ones you liked, then we definitely have to agree to disagree.

I personally felt that the worst actor in the game was the guy who did the cop that Gabriel meets the first time he goes to the police station (not Leber).
