The series creator, Jane Jensen, recently had an interview and she revealed she's already in talks with Activision about securing the rights for Gabriel Knight. If her kickstarter project for her own game studio will be succesful, she is planning to both remake the first 3 games as well as continue the GK series!

Good news indeed - but does anybody really feel that remakes of the first 3 games are necessary? Or was Jane just talking about making some extra cash with an iPad version? All three games have very specific graphical art styles so each game feels unique but still part of the series. I would suggest that Jane should simply start working on GK4 instead :)
I think it's necessary if they intend to continue the series. The current generation of gamers don't know the series, and let's face it, most of them wouldn't touch the old ones.
im not convinced remakes will convince "current gen gamers" to play the games... unless youre adding guns and multiplayer. I also personally dont want to see the 3 games stripped down into the same interface format. Most important thing is that these games are available at places like gog (and they are).
That said, remakes would be pretty interesting to see... very very low on my priority of things i want to see though. If the kickstarter had been for just a remake i wouldv had extremely mixed feelings.

There's a large market of new adult female gamers nowadays. In fact, this gamer demographic is growing a lot faster than the young male one. I suspect this is the group who would be targeted with the remakes.
Personally I'm more interested about her new projects, because I already own original copies of all Gabriel Knight games I'm not that interested about remakes. Only reason why I was willing to pay for Monkey Island and Broken Sword remakes was the price, which was less than $10. I don't believe that I would pay more for GK remakes, but I could easily pay full price for GK4 or another new adventure game (Gray Matter did show that she can still make decent adventure games).
I'm replaying these now. Finished 1 and am about 10% into 2. The visuals physically hurt my eyes. Its not that they did a bad job, its that the technology is so dated its very difficult to play. I had to use a walk-though to finish the first game because the item I was supposed to pick up was not visible around the pixels surrounding it.

I'm a big FMV fan. The videos in the second game are so terribly grainy and blurry I find I'm looking away to prevent real life headaches during the videos... which are the better parts of the game.

Technology has improved so much over the years, these are exactly the types of game that should be remade IMHO.

I'd say a remake would be extremely justifiable. I would sure be interested in them, and I suspect people that can't handle the screenshots of G1 and 2 (and have passed as a result) might like to cut their teeth on the remakes as well. I know I have also passed on some pretty dated titles that I've never played because, without the appeal of nostalgia, I'm not interested in trying to squint my way through a new game.
Keep in mind that GK2 was originally designed with a interlaced visual style... This eliminated most of the 'grainy and blurryness' from the video...

The fact that its so pixellated and blurry is actually caused from a fan patch removing the interlace from the videos.

Also I think a remake of GK2 would kind of ruin the FMV aspects of the game, and turn it into something else... I seriously doubt they'd go about refilming the entire game... and they can't simply 'draw over it'.

I'd actually like to see how that would turn out. I never really thought the game benefitted from FMV anyway.

I'm pretty sure it would be necessary, because to be honest the 3rd 3D feel kinda stunk. The game was overly tedious, like many 3D point and click adventure titles of the time. Plus, she may want to update things a little to sit well with "Today" many things in the game is outdated, and wouldn't make much sense by todays standards.

I would LOVE to see this happen. GK is by far my favorite sierra title, and one of my all time favorite point and click adventure titles.

I think if they remade it, they would actually REMAKE it, not draw over everything..and not refilm it. FMV was popular at the time, but never caught on. I personally prefered rotoscope over FMV, and I think most players would agree, the FMV (And lack of Tim Curry) were the primary flaws of an otherwise good sequel.

I would love a remake of all the the GK games. I jut loaded up GK1 and I realized that my vision is far worse than when I first played them. I wear glassess now and the remakes would be easier for me to look at. I would not change anything about the games only the graphics and maybe update the sound, nothing more.
great news though not sure if the first 3 games really need to be remade! unless there all in 1080p fmv, i'd be in favour of that lol
I´m writting this post from my hotel room in New Orleans...as a tourist I went to the most famous and common areas a first timer would go, and I have to tell you, as soon as I stepped into St Louis Cathedral and Cemetery and Jackson Square It brought me back to GK1, I played it in the year it was released so you could tell the impact it had on me that I could still remember, it also made me do a search on the internet for a remake and that is how I saw this website, great news about it, I just really hope it does happen, I´ll be waiting for the release with impatience.

My vote obviously for the first one of the saga, that made it all happen.

That would be a shame, as this is is probably the best adventuregame serie ever made.

I liked the makeover LucasArts did on Monkey island, but that was all due to Dominique giving voice to Guybrush ones again. I also liked how we could instantly switch between the original and the makeover.

Since the GK allready had voiceacting I don't see how a mere graphical makeover would really add to the experience (or my experience at least). Maybe they could take the stories but modernize the storytelling and use different (gameplay)mechanics, thus also justifying a graphical boost and reaching a younger audience.
I don´t think I would play that myself. I allways thought the 90s adventures were dead on with their method of storytelling and that any game since should look at those games ... These days I think Bioware is the basis for comparison when it comes to storytelling in videogames, but imho it has nothing over the GK games, or games like Discworld Noir or The longest Journey. Best storytelling in a videogame ever. But of course I'm biased, one can't argue with nostalgia :)

GK4! I would love to see that happen. I'm not to fond of the prospect of Activision setting their claws in it though. I'd hate for them to mess up another serie I ones adored. If they can rush a game like Diablo, there's no telling what they would do to a genre that peaked about 15 years ago.

I'm fine with the GK1 graphics myself, but I've come to understand it's something that's disabling the game for a lot of people. I've heard people commenting they literally can't interpret the pictures on screen. I've heard similar complaints about MI2 and other older adventure games with scanned backgrounds.

I'd fully support a GK1 remake to introduce the game to new people. The story and writing haven't aged a bit, in fact I still consider them among the finest this industry has ever managed to produce.
